It can still put rounds in the black at 500 yards!I got my Girand pretty Cheap in the early '80's, but the barrel was shot smooth and it was pitted. I had not choice but to re-barrel. At the time, my friend was shooting match with his M-14 (a great gun) and had a good line on .308 so I followed suit and rebarreled in the same caliber. It works fine in that mode, though I had one errant clip that wouldn't handle the slightly shorter cartridge.
