XP seems to allocate memory for things in an odd fashion.
But the pagefile message only happened when I was using Paintshop Pro 8.
When I mess with my sketches and scan them, the original scan has to be at least 800 pixels per inch.
1600 at tops for good quality.
After that I can resize it down to 480x300 or less and make it 'postable' online.
The size of the initial file is in the range of 100Mb or so.
Onc I'm done, it's usually nibbled down to about 37kb.

We don't have Paintshop Pro 8. We just have Paint. Guess that's a good thing? LOL!
I resize images with Dell Image Expert - Premium Edition and don't seem to have any problems when using it. Whew! I don't need any more problems than I run across already. I get lost too easily. hehehe!
