Driver caught cruising in county on three wheels

Indiana State Trooper Kelly Lazzell had no trouble finding a suspected drunken driver Wednesday morning on Interstate 65.

High speed wasn't the issue. The 2002 Ford Taurus was moving no faster than 50 mph as it passed the Greenwood exit.

The car was missing its right front wheel, however, and dragging its undercarriage as it careened down the southbound lanes around 6 a.m.

"He was blocking traffic from left to right, couldn't even keep it between the lanes," Lazzell said. "Of course, I pull him over, and right there on the front seat is a big bud of marijuana."

Leon Otis Williams, 47, was arrested on preliminary charges of driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana. A test at the Johnson County jail indicated a blood-alcohol level of 0.15, nearly twice the legal limit.

Williams recently moved to Indianapolis' west side from Omaha, Neb., he told Lazzell. He said he had been out celebrating the move when he got lost on his way home and then had to stop for a flat tire.

"He said he couldn't get it changed, and he just decided to drive on," Lazzell said. "He needed to get home."

Williams apparently missed his exit at Rockville Road, however. A Federal Express driver called police after spotting the three-wheeled car on Interstate 465 on the southwest side, near Harding Street. The FedEx driver continued to track the vehicle as it headed south on I-65.

Lazzell said the car had other damage that suggested the wheel came off in a crash. Troopers in Marion County planned to look for the missing wheel or any related damage along the highway, he said.

Although the incident provided some amusement, given that no one apparently was injured, Lazzell said it illustrates the reality that drunken drivers may be still be on the road in the morning, when other drivers are just starting their day. He made another drunken-driving arrest on I-65 about 6 a.m. Sunday.

"I would encourage people, anytime they get something like that, to call us immediately," Lazzell said.

Marijuana does not cause drunken-ness or dangerous driving or irresponsible behavior.

When your blood alcohol is 0.15 you've reached 'bulletproof' anyway.
The bud on the seat is just proof of 'Felony Stupid'.

Where does 'bulletproof' fall into this lexicon?

"...Now I wasn't, uh, knee-crawlin', slip-slidin', reggy-youngin', commode-huggin' drunk, I was God's own drunk, and a fearless man..."

Does anyone else remember early TV ad of an American
car that had a front tire removed and was driven across
the nation?

"Marijuana does not cause drunkenness or dangerous driving or irresponsible behavior"
Sigh.
Marijuana is a depressant and is easily picked up on the standardized field sobriety tests. The horizontal gaze nystagmus test shows how it affects the nervous system. It impairs reaction times and decision making of the driver. To decide to impair your ability to react behind the wheel of a vehicle is not only irresponsible but extraodinarily stupid. To do it with an illegal substance is evidence by itself of irresponsible behavior.
Sorry but not only are you wrong on all counts but for some drivers, dead wrong.
