No doubt you are referring to the note in the Tale of Years for 1482: "Death of Mistress Rose, wife of Master Samwise, on Mid-Year's Day. On September 22 Master Samwiserides out from Bag End...the tradition is handed down that...Samwise passed the Towers, and went to the Grey Havens, and passed over the Sea, last of the Ringbearers."
ConfettiMan was no doubt referring to the final chapter of the book. And there, of course (in the movie as well) Sam goes to the dock to see Frodo off.

No, and I was going to mention that very fact in my post but forgot. I guess that's where it's covered. I've read LOTR at least half a dozen but have never bothered to thoroughly read the appendices. I guess I'm not a die-hard fan, though I have read The Silmarillion and The Lost Tales. :)
Okay, I'm remembering that some of this may have been touched on in the book after all. I seem to recall some discussion between Sam and Frodo about Sam eventually going to the Grey Havens because he was a ring bearer even though it was only for a short period of time. Am I right?
