I would imagine the words' meanings also have to do with their origins. Most likely the vulgar words were the words used by the poor and ill-mannered. Of course, nowadays, people place different stresses on it than previously. Some are even more offended by it and others think it's "cool."

It's only offensive if you choose to let it irritate you. Like I said earlier, my old church thought the words butt and fart were extremely bad words. 'Curse words' are nothing more than man-made 'wrongs.'
