Yes, am teaching freshman comp at a Jr College part time.
Very, very, very structured program. Spent half the semester trying to fit my style into my supervisor's even more structured, narrowly structured lock-step program.
Finally, via a colleague's encouragement dropped back and began teaching in my own style with much better and faster improvement on the part of the students.
They have to submit an argument paper with MLA refs and another unit paper polished ahead of time plus an inclass summary/response to a newspaper editorial for their final portfolio.
Getting them to abide by the criteria of this system has been and remains somewhat challenging. They've improved greatly. And some are potentially wonderful writers naturally. But some are stubborn. Many are lazy. We shall see how they do. They've been told they must remove "you's" etc. from such essays in this system. Some are refusing virtually. The notion of academic writing is just 'does not compute' to them.
Anyway--it's been an experience too opposite to my Taiwan and China teaching experiences for my taste or comfort.
Will see if I'm able to teach the psych course in the spring.
Thanks for your kind comments on this.

who wanted to post religious belief as standard news.
NO!!!!!!!!!!
I DID NOT!
But NEITHER did I want to avoid including the spiritual and especially prayer aspects of the post.
IT IS HIDEOUS DUPLICITY, HYPOCRISY, IRRATIONALITY to me that we can talk ad nauseum about Iraq and Moslems etc. and all the valid relevant aspects of the religious factors in the situation.
YET, WE BELIEVERS ARE EXPECTED TO NEUTER, CENSOR, REMOVE WHOLESALE any such flavor on our side of reality in a country founded on Biblical principles for the free exercise thereof by fierce Believers. What a travesty.
And what a mockery of Conservatism as I see it.
In terms of the religious aspects of the post, I merely wanted those inclined to be aware and to pray as they felt led. The rest can ignore every word and line they are not interested in or inclined to be offended by. I do that with posts by others from value systems averse to my preferences when fitting and necessary.
As to Francis, I'm sad you have that impression. He's a quality person. And I'm super critical of spiritual leaders. He's among the top. I'm sorry he's not come off that way to you in this post. He's remarkably humble and loving given all the givens. He also tends to be generous hearted and kind. I respect him enormously. I'm surprised and a bit shocked that others, even nonbelievers would have trouble respecting him.

Assoc. Press has not usually been considered the bottom of the barrel, though. You folks act like it is.
Sheesh.
Evidently Jesus The Christ Himself would rarely pass muster as the source of truth to you folks.
Sheesh.

Now here is a subject on which we agree!
It's much more important than politics. I teach English Comp. I and English Comp. II. I have taught creative writing, which is much more familiar to me.
Students learn writing by writing and re-writing, and on this we can agree. That's so nice. It's so much more familiar and a lot like the way I grew up.
But the research paper writing class is a little stupid. It's great that they learn how to summarize an article and how to quote; and it's great that they learn how to paraphrase (if you go by the text). But they don't actually learn anything until they're set loose in the libraries to do some real research. I know that in my own case, I never learned about research until I was forced to do it on my own and then publish what I found and wrote. (And these were few. I don't want to sound like a genius--I was not.)
Literary fiction was a different story.
But I am interested in what you have found.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
EDIT, EDIT, EDIT.
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE SOME MORE.
EDIT, EDIT, EDIT SOME MORE.
. . .
Get diverse feedback from the range in your audience.
Learn to inhabit the skin as much as possible--at least the minds of your readers, potential readers.
Write with heart and purpose or don't bother.
Condense where possible, practical, fitting--which is usually a lot.
Or, as one book I used in China put it . . .
1. HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY.
2. SAY IT WELL.
3. STOP WHEN YOU HAVE.
I should go to bed.
Appreciate the writing dialogue stuff. Much better to go to sleep on than the other. I hate the other sorts of exchanges. I just refuse to run from them in my older years.

They not only relegated it to the religion forum but ultimately relegated it to chat.
Which means that they, too, realized it isn't the type of article that goes to the religion forum.
All that said, I don't care anymore. I'm done with it.
Honestly, have a nice day.

RA, that could be true, but I heard on FNC a little while ago about they a re planning a 'catastrophic' event. They never got around to the story, but they did headline it. I wrote FNC and asked why they did not?

Thanks for posting this Quix. I only got it this morning as I was away from work for the Thanksgiving holiday.
My sister died yesterday. I pray she's finally found peace for her troubled life. Pray for her children to come to know the Lord. They're heading down the same path as their mother, drinking, divorce (she had 7 husbands!), you name it. They can't see it but I sure can. Love you, Maryxxx

Just pray, Petronski. We know our nation is in deep doo with terrorists wanting to destroy us. I always pray "Let no weapon formed against us prosper." Among other things, of course. Prayer can thwart the enemy. The CIA sure can't. Maryxxx

We need to surround our troops and others in Iraq and Afghanistan with 24 hour around the clock prayer. These people will stop at nothing to destroy us. We have to hold the course in spite of them. Mxxx

And what's your problem with that, WackyKat? There are many who wouldn't see it on the religion forum. This is a warning to ALL Americans, not just the 'religious' ones. Your bias is showing.

Keep up the good work, Quix, and don't pay attention to those who pooh pooh all this. They just don't realize how important it is for people to know how to pray for our nation and against the terrorists who want to kill us. Never quit! Maryxxx

There came a warning a few weeks ago from the intercessors that NYC was in danger of a nuclear or dirty bomb attack. I take these things seriously and pray about them. I'm not overly worried about them but I see them as warnings so people will pray. We, as Christians, have the power from God to avert these disasters, if we only listen to what God is telling us. Trouble is, most of us are too busy or too apathetic to give a hoot. Thankfully, there are intercessors who take the time and then they pass on the warnings to us. Quix is a 'watchman on the wall,' as I believe I am. We call people to pray.
