#63 Broken Reed
The reed bends in
obedience to the indigo
sky repeating in the
stalk planted water.
Its back-broken defiant
flash defines the angle
of indifference
in sun-fixed radiance,
and dark iteration.
A golden suture of
urgent embroidery laid
in rebellious thread
upon the somber silk
reflections of wavering
regrets, joins the quick
and the still.
The rushy rustle of the wind
now ripples the soul
that breaks and stitches
and breaks again.

In marshy patches
along side
country roads
the cattail grows
Thick in water
strong as iron
flexible as silk
in a gentle breeze
are we soldiers
of the marsh
standing tall
and uniform
or are we lowly
road side weeds
cursed by some
and revered by others
a basket makers dream
cattails by the stream
