It bothers me, alot.
The locals in my area just aren't concerned with what happens 'across teh country' for some reason.
I don't know WHY this is, but it is.
Even though NY state lost about 3000 lives on 9/11, they seem to be wrapping themselves into a zone of denial, saying that what happens elsewhere in the country doesn't effect them.
I don't understand the thinking myself.
I have heard the incidents you mention and it bothers the hell outta me.
It bothers me even more when I see some of the attitudes about it exhibited by my neighbors.

That attitude is pretty prevalent here on the left coast. Many people are more concerned about Korea having nukes because they are worried that the nukes can reach "us" here, meaning the West coast. I've heard people say that what happened in New York with the attack was something that happened to "them", when challenged about the attack on us, collectively. Oh, No, WE weren't attacked, that was New York.
