Well, in NJ a couple years back a farmer beat that rabid rat to death with a broomstick and they were going to hang him out to dry over it.
(After all, it was cruelty to an animal.)

Well, the newsies initially played it up as if the heroic rabid rat was defending itself from the evil encroachment of the farmer. (But not in those words. It was more like "feel sorry for the poor rat.")

When the public outcry got loud enough, they changed their tune and attempted to spin their previous reports to fit their new position.
The farmer was let go, but told that they'd "be keeping an eye on him."
