I joined Freerepublic in an attempt to converse with other conservatives. Lately it's been a struggle even to find a conservative post.
All I see are two kinds of people, the "blame Clinton(and/or) Democrats for everything bad that happens(ed),
and the Bushbots that put GWB up to a place equaling Christ.
Neither are true, and I'm a truthseeker first and foremost.
All I see now are threads full of propaganda, ..War is peace. Ignorance is strength. Freedom is slavery. Lies are truth. Patriotism is treason. Fascism is patriotism.
I see very few coherent posts, and almost none espousing true conservatism.
We have both houses and a President, yet the spending is out of control. We get rid of the death tax, but now my grandchildren will spend their life paying down the debt, if they aren't drafted to fight the next oppresive ruler in some desert of the Presidents next whim.
I could go on, but an opus is not what I intended. I wish everyone well, and will keep you in my prayers
Whereas once there was a sense of dialogue, this forum has become polluted with a bunch of pig-headed yahoos who certainly are not conservatives in the traditional meaning of that term.
Bill Buckley conservatives they're not.
Especially the E-Z Cheese one.
Sometimes, you only see what you're looking for. I've had moments (I think all Freepers do at one point) where I felt out of sync with the prevailing wisdom at FR -- on topics as varied as the War on Drugs, Evolution, Religion, and Euthanasia. Then I realized the more I dwelled on this, the more I subconsciously sought out threads about which I knew I'd be in the minority. It's called 'playing the martyr', and it happens to the best of people. There are TONS of threads with dissenting views. Ever go to the Smokey Backroom? Sure, there's plenty of vitriol thrown around there, but also very substantive debate.
Nobody has all the answers. But this is as good a place to find them as any.
I know, I broke a cardinal rule by reasoning with an opus. There I go again, being in the minority just for the heck of it! ;)

Look, whoever posts a goodbye thread will get made fun of because there's no point in saying that you are leaving and never coming back. Doesn't matter what you believe.
Opus threads only work in small forums with members who all know each other, not here.
Leave this instant.
Ever see "Pirates of Penzance" by Gilbert and Sullivan? There's a wonderful scene where the constabulary keeps singing "We Go, We Go", about how they're about to rush off to fight the marauding pirates. A character (The Major-General, I think), interjects "But you DON'T go!"
That's what opuses remind me of.
Do tell...
At the Aug. 22, 1968 debate in Chicago - the penultimate encounter in the series, with an estimated 10 million people watching - things began with relative calm. But it didnt stay that way, and before long the men began exchanging words that one simply didnt hear on TV at that time. Vidal called Buckley a "pro-crypto-Nazi," a modest slip of the tongue, he later said, because he was searching for the word "fascist" and it just didn't come out. Inflamed by the word "Nazi" and the whole tenor of the discussion, Buckley snapped: "Now listen, you queer," he said, "stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or Ill sock you in you goddamn face and youll stay plastered." Smith attempted to calm the exchange with "gentlemen, let's not call names," but the damage had been done.
IMHO, an opus should be earned, you've not yet paid the dues.
But..., you would have had to have noticed him (her) in the first place.
I think that's the way to go most of the time, except when it's a small forum where everyone would go nuts wondering if you were okay or not. Then a goodbye thread would be a good idea so no one thinks you're dead under an underpass or something.
