The replies to your post reinforce your point.
Whereas once there was a sense of dialogue, this forum has become polluted with a bunch of pig-headed yahoos who certainly are not conservatives in the traditional meaning of that term.
Bill Buckley conservatives they're not.

I'm sorry you don't appreciate our President. The next five years will be difficult for you, whether you visit FR or not; whereas most of us will be happy every day he's in office.

All I see now are threads full of propaganda, ..War is peace. Ignorance is strength. Freedom is slavery. Lies are truth. Patriotism is treason. Fascism is patriotism. Sometimes, you only see what you're looking for. I've had moments (I think all Freepers do at one point) where I felt out of sync with the prevailing wisdom at FR -- on topics as varied as the War on Drugs, Evolution, Religion, and Euthanasia. Then I realized the more I dwelled on this, the more I subconsciously sought out threads about which I knew I'd be in the minority. It's called 'playing the martyr', and it happens to the best of people. There are TONS of threads with dissenting views. Ever go to the Smokey Backroom? Sure, there's plenty of vitriol thrown around there, but also very substantive debate.
Nobody has all the answers. But this is as good a place to find them as any.
I know, I broke a cardinal rule by reasoning with an opus. There I go again, being in the minority just for the heck of it! ;)

Why should anyone respond reasonably to a dishonest post? This guy is not and never was a conservative.

The replies to your post reinforce your point. Look, whoever posts a goodbye thread will get made fun of because there's no point in saying that you are leaving and never coming back. Doesn't matter what you believe.
Opus threads only work in small forums with members who all know each other, not here.

Please if you are unhappy here you can go start your own news forum. You can call it whinerepublic.com,

Opus threads only work in small forums with members who all know each other, not here. Ever see "Pirates of Penzance" by Gilbert and Sullivan? There's a wonderful scene where the constabulary keeps singing "We Go, We Go", about how they're about to rush off to fight the marauding pirates. A character (The Major-General, I think), interjects "But you DON'T go!"
That's what opuses remind me of.

"Bill Buckley conservatives they're not. "Do tell...
At the Aug. 22, 1968 debate in Chicago - the penultimate encounter in the series, with an estimated 10 million people watching - things began with relative calm. But it didnt stay that way, and before long the men began exchanging words that one simply didnt hear on TV at that time. Vidal called Buckley a "pro-crypto-Nazi," a modest slip of the tongue, he later said, because he was searching for the word "fascist" and it just didn't come out. Inflamed by the word "Nazi" and the whole tenor of the discussion, Buckley snapped: "Now listen, you queer," he said, "stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or Ill sock you in you goddamn face and youll stay plastered." Smith attempted to calm the exchange with "gentlemen, let's not call names," but the damage had been done.

Here's a hint: for an opus to succeed you must be a participatory of FR. In order to be a participatory you must substantially PARTICIPATE. I'd never consider myself a member of that club; you shouldn't either (membership requires a large number of relevant posts).
IMHO, an opus should be earned, you've not yet paid the dues.

I can't understand why people don't just shut up and leave without all this drama. I much prefer the mysterious fade that leaves one wondering where a poster went.

Speaking of 'number of posts', is there a way I can tell how many posts I've made to FR since joining? Even better, is there a 'user stats' page that I've managed to avoid finding after three years? I'm curious just how much time I've actually spent here.

I much prefer the mysterious fade that leaves one wondering where a poster went. But..., you would have had to have noticed him (her) in the first place.

I much prefer the mysterious fade that leaves one wondering where a poster went. I think that's the way to go most of the time, except when it's a small forum where everyone would go nuts wondering if you were okay or not. Then a goodbye thread would be a good idea so no one thinks you're dead under an underpass or something.
To: dadokane
Yeah, back in the Old Days®, no one ever made fun of an opus.
