Slavery Question: Please Help.

Hello Everyone,

I am having a discussion with an extremely liberal friend of mine, and he made the claim that only Christian white societies have ever been involved in slavery. I know this isn't true, but for the life of me, can't come up with any counter examples.

Can anybody here assist me in finding counter examples, and resources to back them up?

Dude, virtually every country has been involved of slavery of some sort. Slavery has always been a part of any semi-large economy. Even now we still have slaves, they just don't live in this country. That's the reality.

And, dude, as you get more educated, you'll discover that liberals are d-u-m-b. My friends have made similar claims about Western/Christian culture, all of which were easily debunked by a 30-second google search.

No cites for you but the Arabs were quite comfortable with slavery and pursued it long after it had been outlawed in England. I don't know whether your friend considers Arabs to be "white."

Certainly the Portuguese were trafficking in slavery as long as there was a market to do so. Again, and I have no idea, are Portuguese "white"? I'm sure they think that they are but probably Jesse Jackson would consider them to be Latinos and therefore oppressed victims of northern Europeans. Native Americans, especially in the Northwest, had slaves. It's been a pretty common circumstance in most cultures for millineum. Good luck.

Ask him to pick up his Bible and read the Old Testament. Even better, go to an on-line Bible and search the OT for the word "slave". There are numerous references that by definition are pre-Christian cultures, and a lot of them will reference cultures other than the Jewish one.

Try just about every society that ever existed. Pre-Christian Rome, Greece, Egypt, South American cultures, many early middle European cultures, most Mediterranean cultures, and all Arab cultures. Plus we usually bought our African slaves from other Africans who had captured and enslaved them.

I've heard "white oppressor" liberal garbage before, but this takes the cake in ignorance.

Islamic countries imported more slaves than the Europeans. Black tribes caught and sold slaves to the Europeans and kept quite a few for themselves. Native American Indians routinely had slaves after defeating other tribes. Slavery is still is an on-going probelm in certain African countries. Free Blacks in America owned slaves before the Civil War. The first slave owner in North America was a free Black. Whites (Irish) were sold into slavery by the English.

In 5000+ years of history, it's only in the last 200-odd years that any society didn't practice slavery -- and those "white Christian" societies were the first ones to decide slavery was wrong.

Slavery has been practiced by nearly every culture on the planet. It is still practiced in the Sudan, in Mauritania, in Islamic countries around the globe.

Long before whitey set foot in Africa, Arab slave traders were doing a booming business. So were the Africans.
