Very interesting link Sean - thanks. Amazing how similar the two planes are in those photos, but as was pointed out by a sharp-eyed individual, the "American" lettering doesn't quite match up, making the correlation suspect (if those are, in fact, photos of the proper planes).

When I read that 138 people had died in the crash, I didn't see how they COULD be the same plane. Not with those retrofitted fuel tanks installed. But I researched, and the 727-200 has a specified capacity of 189 passengers plus crew, so I suppose it COULD be possible to fit 138 people plus the tanks into the plane, but... Heck, you seem to know a lot more about it than me anyways, so I'll just lurk now. :-)
