I live in West Virginia, about two hours' time from that interchange named after Byrd.

What part of WV? I've only been to the tips of the panhandles.

The community of Beckley ZotNot refers to is 50 miles south of the state capital of Charleston. The tunnels are another 50 or so miles south of Beckley on I-77.

The first is on the Virginia border near Princeton and the second is in VA near Wythville and the junction of I-81.

The tunnels and I-77 have little apparent strategic importance. The I-75, I-81, and I-95 corridors carry much more traffic and freight.
