I know plenty of folks who keep dual citizenship because it is safer to fly. Picture a hijack situation where the foreign highjackers collect 100 or so passports to see who might have some leverage in their bargaining at the next landing and who might be executed...turning in an Irish or Austrian passport might save an American neck.

There has been over 30 years of ongoing air traffic terrorism though the initial decade or so of highjackings didn't hit home here to John Q.Public (though it sure hit home to those involved.)

A PIA flight to/from Karachi in the 80's was hijacked by Palestinians. One passenger stood up, indignant, waving his passport, proclaiming he was an American, albeit a naturalised Pakistani/Indian.

He was promptly shot dead.
