Just in case anyone missed this last night.

For his sake only, it's a shame the Cubs didn't win Game 7 (as well as the Series, lest he be blamed for something else caused by their having to play Game 7, such as the sub-optimal pitching rotation, or missing a needed day off).

A little perspective: The operators of the Stanton Island ferry who allowed many to be killed and brutally injured yesterday.

A little more perspective: Those who operate abortuaries. They are the ones who should be public enemy #1, not some young basefall fan caught up in the moment.

This wasn't some Thursday evening game in the middle of May against some visiting perennial loser.

What about the economic impact this single, selfish act has on the City of Chicago? Gone is the flush that would have arrived with its first World Series in 44 years.

I was really delighted to hear THAT FAN finally took some responsibility yesterday and issued this statement of apology. To me, that's what I was personally hoping he would do. It does not absolve his act, but it gives recognition to the fact he apparently finally understands he wronged a great many people.

To underscore, he is NOT a knowledgable fan, not in the least. And anyone who believes the Cubs should have simply and easily put this incident behind them, has no understanding or appreciation for the nuances of this simple but most complicated of sporting games: the situation changed wholesale for BOTH ballclubs.

If you watched the video replays of his act -- not the photos -- it wasn't a bunch of people going for the ball -- THAT FAN's hand and arm were extended beyond the rail into the field of play and THAT FAN was the only spectator so positioned. It's irony that fate also kept the ball from him.

Diehard Cubs fans are going to calm down and move one, waiting until next year, tallying yet another tear-stained page in their book of dashed hopes, and always, always remembering this thoughtless jerk who did something that not everyone would do, regardless what some would think. (And if that's an act "everyone" would do, well, that's the basis of about what I've been writing on this subject -- we've got some serious, serious problems in this society of ours if "everyone" thinks their immediate want prevails over the good of everyone else.)

Go Red Sox.

"I ask that Cub fans everywhere redirect the negative energy'
OH , BROTHER ! He sounds like a liberal ! Redirect the negative energy ? This guy just needs to catch the next flight to Miami and start his new life. I`m sure that town will treat him very well. He did a very stupid thing. Any REAL baseball fans KNOWS not to interfere with a playable ball, definitely not one that benefits your own team ! A REAL Cubs fan would have been holding everyone back so Alou could play the ball. He says he didn`t see Alou, well if that is the case, he has no sense of the game. He must now take the heat for his actions. You cannot apologize and expect everything to be better. It is sad , but true. Go to Miami Mr. Bartman. Your new home is waiting.........Oh, by the way, I am a Cardinals fan, I hate the Cubs.

IT'S ONLY A GAME GUYS!!! YEESH!!!
besides, HE didn't give up 8 runs, the team did. if the teanm cannot pull it together after a little incident like this, they don't deserve to win. blame the team, not some guy who only did what everybody else would have done.
to blame some poor guy who cannot defend himself for the failure of the Cubs to win is worthy of the Clintons vs. Billy Dale.

Using this poor fool as a scapegoat is pathetic. He didn't give up the 3-1 series lead. He didn't give up 8 runs in the 8th inning. He didn't cause the Cubs to choke in Game 7.

EXCLUSIVE:  Cubs Fan 'Steve Bartman' revealed to be Time-traveler Art Bell!

(10-16-03)  The Wacky World News has learned exclusively that the Chicago Cubs fan whose interference with play in Game 6 of the recent National League playoffs may have cost the Cubbies a spot in this year's World Series, is none other than a younger, time-traveling Art Bell, current weekend host of the overnight radio program, Coast-to-Coast.

Following his mea culpa earlier today to the Chicago media and fans, 'Steve Bartman' as he is otherwise known granted an exclusive interview to WWN reporters in which the truth came out.

According to the youthful Bell, he was visited some thirty years ago by his older self after the Cubs and Boston Red Sox reached the World Series in the 2003 timeline, which eventually precipitated the start of Armageddon and the End of the World.  In order to forestall this fateful catastrophe, the elder Bell recruited him to travel back to the present to help do something to change the course of history.

"We thought that this would be the least conspicuous way to change things, but we didn't count on all the grief and publicity and everything," remarked a flustered 'Bartman'.  "I mean, the Cubs usually lose all the time anyway, don't they?!"  He then quickly departed, stating that he may have left something on the stove prior to his leap into the future.

The current Art Bell could not be reached for comment.
