UT faculty 'mourn' the loss of academic freedom in campus walks
Chron ^ | Abigail Rosenthal

On the University of Texas campus, students, staff and visitors will see the same sight at noon, Monday through Thursday: faculty members silently marching through campus for 15 minutes, wearing black and holding signs.

"There's a part of it that really is just a place to put our grief, so there's a piece of this that really is ritualistic in that way," said Karma Chávez, UT chapter president of the American Association of University Professors and professor of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies.

Since Sept. 21, Chávez and other faculty members have protested changes at UT Austin that include department consolidations, course cuts, the elimination of certain majors and what they consider a loss of academic freedom. Many of those changes have hit the College of Liberal Arts.

This is such an obviously performative display you know it’s uber leftist participating.

What does one actually study in these “-studies” degrees.

Good riddance.

How much ‘academic freedom’ does it take to teach mathematics?

“College of Liberal Arts”

Yeah, performative demonstrating... creative ballot harvesting... community organizing... rioting and communist indoctrination.

Yeah you’re not ‘free’ to murder your own society.

The only one I have seen silenced was Charlie Kirk. These clowns have no problem getting their voices heard.

“What does one actually study in these “-studies” degrees.”

Pretty sure they teach a course that has zero use except getting a job teaching it. There should be liberal arts schools that teach only these bull$hit subjects but the student has to pay cash up front with no “student loans” or government funding. If there is really a benefit from Under Water Basket Weaving or Behavioral Science of Waste Disposal for Vertically Challenged Disabled Veteran Trans Women of Color then it will support itself. I’d rather have schools focused on STEM. I’ll never understand why I had to take a Theatre class for a Mechanical Engineering degree.

So this is actually about downsizing and the press only focuses on leftist drama.

You are free to take those classes elsewhere.

“...I’ll never understand why I had to take a Theatre class for a Mechanical Engineering degree....”

It’s even far worse now in many engineering cirriculums.
In order to maintain their school accreditation, the communists have forced engineering students to take up to 18 semester-hours of Social Justice Warrior classes in order to graduate. The result is that an engineering student in today’s curriculum would have to take graduate school classes to receive the same education that was available in a 4-year degree program before the communist takeover of our universities. One cannot despise these basstids enough.

My son graduated from a small private STEM school. They were required to take Psychology and some sort of art appreciation course. Both were state legislated.

For Psych, he waited till he was a Senior for a guaranteed A. He and a buddy played online solitaire throughout each class trying to determine if playing fast or strategically won more games. (and got an A)

The art course made sense by trying to get these black and white brains to see a little gray.

The great thing about the small school, he was in his major on day 1.

Endless, perpetual and eternal grievances; hate America; hate whitey; brown good; slavery; paternalistic society bad.

That’ll be $150,000, please.

I’ll never understand why I had to take a Theatre class for a Mechanical Engineering degree.

1. It creates more revenue for the school.

2. It elevates the importance of the Left-controlled disciplines and gives them a chance to influence you.

I’m more sad that my Alma mater looked so pitiful against Florida then I am about this bullshit. I am overjoyed that UT’s Regents have started reversing some of the leftist crap that’s been going on there since before I graduated 48 years ago.

Getting rid of all those woke DEI majors is actually a GAIN of academic freedom for the rest of the U.

As usual, the marxist progressives calling evil good and good evil.

The downsizing is probably because the Education Department is starting to limit student loans for useless degrees. Hence all the complaining from LAS profs..

Universities across Texas have changed in the past few years. The passage of Senate Bill 17 in 2023 forced the closure of diversity, equity and inclusion offices at state-funded schools, such as UT. In February, UT announced it would consolidate four departments—African and African Diaspora Studies, American Studies, Mexican American and Latino Studies, and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies—into a Social and Cultural Analysis department. In August, UT President Jim Davis revealed plans to overhaul the university's core curriculum requirements.

Too many students were going into massive debt only to discover their degree in 'gender studies' got them a job offer from Burger King - where the could ask, "Would YOU like fries with that'?

That crap wasn't fair to the students, taxpayers or Universitas. If these professors want to start their own private college to offer these majors, they should do it.

“I’d rather have schools focused on STEM. I’ll never understand why I had to take a Theatre class for a Mechanical Engineering degree.”

When finishing up on my M.E. I once asked my advisor a similar question to which they responded “... to make you a more well-rounded person educationally.” I responded “I want to be an M.E. - I already know a lot about ‘round’.” Advisor rolled his eyes - prolly not the first time he had heard that ...
