Masked Israeli settlers attacked veteran Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine in the
occupied West Bank Fri, Oct 16, 2026, near the village of Abu Falah (northeast of Ramallah).
Dozens of masked settlers dressed in black descended on the area, setting
olive groves on fire, hurling stones, and beating Palestinian villagers.
Levine, who was clearly marked with press insignia and wearing body armor, was cornered, knocked to the ground, beaten with sticks/bats, and kicked repeatedly. Her camera, phone, and bag were also stolen.
Levine sustained a broken rib, broken vertebrae, lacerations, and a deep cut on her hand, requiring treatment at hospitals in Ramallah and Israel.
Levine was covering the annual Palestinian olive harvest.
The Washington Post and international press freedom groups condemned the unprovoked attack. Israel Defense Forces and police stated the incident was under investigation, though P/M Netanyahu’s office initially claimed the facts remained “unclear” — a description firmly disputed by The Post’s executive editor and on-scene witnesses.
US lawmakers and the State Department issued statements addressing the violence.
