President Donald Trump on Saturday called on Congress to impose mandatory prison sentences on people convicted of defrauding Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security and proposed holding state and local politicians personally liable if they knowingly allow such fraud to continue.
"Today, I'm calling on Congress to pass legislation to address fraud in Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security programs," Trump said in a video posted on Truth Social.
Trump said the first part of his proposal would establish mandatory minimum sentences for people who steal from federal benefit programs, eliminating probation as an option.
"If you steal from the American people, you will go to prison and for a long period of time," Trump said. "And the more you steal, the longer you'll stay in that prison."
Trump said repeat offenders would face even tougher penalties.
"If you're a convicted fraudster who gets caught stealing from the American people a second time, your sentence will be doubled," he said.
The president also proposed financial penalties for state and local officials who know about fraud and have the authority to stop it but fail to act.
"Under our proposal, if a state or local politician knows about fraud and has the ability to stop it, but does nothing about it, they can be personally liable for the full loss of the American taxpayers' money that they should have stopped and they should have saved," Trump said.
Trump did not provide specific sentencing ranges in the video or explain the legal standard that would be used to determine when an elected official knew about fraud or had the ability to prevent it.
The proposal comes as the Trump administration has stepped up federal efforts to combat fraud involving government benefit programs.

We can start with the Somali fraudsters.
I’d start with Deep Staters.
Pour encourager les autres...
:-)
Amen. Make it so.
Good deal my neighbor tribe abuse the hell out of it,may be dealers too?.
Two of the three haven’t been out of home in over a year.
Sounds good to me.
We need to give lawyers 1/2 of all recovered benefits for convictions.
A **letter of marque** was a government authorization allowing a privately owned armed vessel to **capture enemy ships and property** during wartime. The people doing this were called **privateers**.
The full legal phrase was:
> **Letters of marque and reprisal**
It appears directly in **Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution**, which gives Congress the power:
> “To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water.”
So in Jefferson’s era, the legal mechanism was **letters of marque and reprisal**, although the First Barbary War also involved direct action by the U.S. Navy under congressional authorization.
Phillip Esformes, Lawrence Duran, Salomon Melgen. All had their sentences comminuted after convictions for Medicare fraud. Over $2 billion in victim repayments were wiped out by pardons and clemency. The first was convicted of a scheme worth over $1 billion dolllars on his own. Kind of rings hollow when the biggest offenders are let go. So who should be in prison if not them?
Commuted. Stupid phone.
Africans, Muzzies, Somalis, Hasids
all know how to steal from taxpayers.....
Greedy thieving foreigners work our govt system against
us 24/7 ..... .......lining their pockets w/ our tax dollars.
Start with Rick Scott. Rick Scott oversaw the largest health care fraud settlement in U.S. history as the CEO of Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation.
Rick Scott was never personally charged with a crime. During a civil deposition in 2000, he invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination 75 times.
Sounds like if this is vigorously, and I mean just that,VIGOROUSLY enforced...then this might accomplish someting.
I was curious if any of them had been deported yet. It seems not. Somehow, they're all naturalized citizens.
And tax fraud
Democrats, their pocket judges and fraud partners all oppose.
Democrats, their pocket judges and fraud partners all oppose.
If that passes, we will need to double prison capacity.
All permanent visa holders can become naturalized citizens after 5 years on that visa.
