Roughly 500 troops are deploying to Texas’ Rio Grande Valley this week, sources confirmed to NewsNation, as federal forces step up border operations following a shooting incident involving the Coast Guard.
Video obtained by NewsNation shows troops being dropped onto islands in the sector from Chinook helicopters.
The deployment comes days after Coast Guard personnel came under gunfire from suspected cartel members on the Rio Grande.
The Coast Guard said Coast Guard Forces Rio Grande personnel encountered gunfire from the Mexican border near Garceno, Texas, on Saturday while conducting joint interdiction operations with federal partners. Personnel returned fire.
No injuries to Coast Guard or other personnel were reported, and no damage to Coast Guard assets was reported, the agency said. The incident remains under investigation.
“The Coast Guard works closely with U.S. Border Patrol, the Department of War and the Texas Military Department to secure the border, disrupt illicit activity and protect the American people,” the agency said in a statement.
It added it will continue to use a “layered, integrated approach” to control, secure and defend the border, and threats to its members and partners are taken “extremely seriously.”
U.S. forces are also confronting cartel-linked drones along this stretch of the border.

If we’re not shooting back we should be - disproportionately.
Agreed.
“..If we’re not shooting back we should be - disproportionately.’
Sun Tzu “show the enemy harm, and he will not advance”.
Maybe they can take out the new “caravan” of new Limited Edition Better Lifers headed towards the Pedo Joe Bidenskyyyyy entrance to America.
Seems like I remember Trump talking about taking out the cartels. I guess that was before he was going to level Iran.
We do now have the Shield of the Americas which is already in action, it takes time and Mexico has to be handled.
Everybody settle down. I heard they are sending Talarico down to wade into the crossfire, his arms in the air, blessing everyone to turn the other cheek and love their neighbor. News cameras showing it all. /s
yeah, their ROE better be to shoot to kill ...
Stop pussyfooting around with these mongrels. Deploy a couple hundred Apache and Viper attack helicopters to our southern border.
Napalm and cluster bombs work great.
/Do nor forget the A-10 with more payload and bullets and general grief for the bad guys.
Relative to the A-10 my son was a combat medic in Iraq for two tours. He said the Apache and the A-10 were their best friend. The only problem with the A-10 is it does not have painted on its side “United States Army.”
I also remember a writing about an A-10 pilot. He wanted to be a Mach+ fighter pilot, they all do. He got an A-10 instead. After flying it and protecting our troops on the ground he wanted nothing else than an A-10. He had his job and loved it. The guys on the ground loved him also, but did not even know him.
+1. I’ve seen a youtube clip (or 2) of our guys hunkered down under cover and an A-10 strafing the enemy. Our guys started cheering like, well, like an A-10 strafing the enemy. Made me grin.
It makes no sense to helicopter troops onto islands in that region. There are a few islands but the idea to control the river from the islands, instead of the shore on the Texas side, now that makes more sense to me. The river is not very wide.
