Los Angeles County introduced a 10.25 percent sales tax on Thursday, four months after voters approved Measure ER.
The Essential Services Restoration Act (Measure ER) overwhelmingly passed in L.A. County earlier this year, raising the sales tax by a half-cent to support health care and other essential services – from 9.75 percent to 10.25 percent.
“For every $100 in taxable purchases, Measure ER adds 50 cents in tax, bringing the total to $110.25,” noted NBC News. “The increase is temporary. Measure ER allows the tax to remain in effect for five years until Oct. 1, 2031 as it is projected to generate about $1 billion annually.”
Supporters of the measure say that it will support roughly 700,000 L.A. County residents dealing with the loss of health insurance as federal funding for Medi-Cal is reduced:
Proponents say Measure ER will provide health care support for those who are losing Medi-Cal so they don’t show up to the local emergency rooms sicker with more serious illnesses.
The federal funding cut will also impact public hospitals and clinics, but if Measure ER passed, it would make up for the lost funds and save some of the public health care facilities and programs.
Critics of the measure, however, charge that it imposes an “unreasonable and unfairly harsh” sales tax in a county with an already high tax. L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger also said that residents are “stretched thin” with one of the highest metropolitan sales taxes in the nation.
“This proposed half-cent increase would push us even higher, making our county less affordable for families and less appealing for consumers to shop and businesses to operate,” Barger said.

Average price of a new car in the US is $51,000. Plus $5227.00 tax of course!!
20% is better.
the little town of Benson AZ has a 10.5% sales tax
the town gets 4% and the state and county get the remainder
top that with very high property tax
Arizona government is very corrupt
Two words: Laffer Curve.
Sure it is. LOL!
Example: A temporary telephone tax was enacted in 1898 to help pay for the Spanish-American war. It was finally repealed in 2006.
“The Essential Services Restoration Act “ In other words, we blew the money we’ve already confiscated from you so we need more to promise this time we will provide the services we are hired to provide.
“The increase is temporary.” Fell for it again, Ha, Ha, Ha.
“half-cent to support health care and other essential services “ In other words, more freebees for wetbacks that shouldn’t even be here.
“The increase is temporary”. Who believes that??
I recall my father’s comments about sales tax when our state first introduced it. He said the state guaranteed it was only a temporary measure to meet budget shortfalls. He went on to say that once a tax was imposed it never goes away, it only gets worse. HE WAS SO CORRECT!
I continue to be pleased that I don’t live anywhere near California. LOL.
That's what they all say - and it never is.
“It was finally repealed in 2006.”
See, it was temporary!
Yeah but the weather is nice
California doesn't offer any tax break for trading the in old car either..
They’re getting what they voted for.
People will get used to it and in five years, they will forget it was supposed to be temporary and it will remain in effect.
They might, if they think Congress will continue to write a check.
But this reads to me like CA doesn’t think Deep State will be able to steal the midterms.
If CA would vote for this, why does Deep State have to steal its elections...?
Now the price of gas is going thru the roof and we still have the tax.
State tax: 52.4 cents/gal.
Federal tax: 18.3 cents/gal
Total tax: 70.7 cents/gal
Essential Services socialism for the most part got to keep the illegals happy for the votes.
