Is a Good King Better Than a Republic? w/ Jeremy Boreing
Nick Freitas ^ | 9/22

Posted on 09/23/2026 9:40:05 AM PDT by ProgressingAmerica

Why do we love the idea of a good king in fantasy but choose a constitutional republic in real life?

Nick Freitas sits down with Jeremy Boreing to explore the appeal of monarchy, the limits of representative government, and whether a powerful ruler can create a free and virtuous society. From King Arthur and the stories we tell to America’s founding principles, they examine the tension between freedom, responsibility, and the desire for strong leadership.

The conversation also turns to a larger question: Can a nation preserve its freedom through politics alone, or must its people and cultural institutions take responsibility for the values that sustain it?

Subscribe to Nick Freitas Clips for more conversations on history, culture, faith, and the ideas shaping America.

Progressive indoctrtination in the schools has taken a slight turn that the progressives did not expect.

Yes, GenZ is heavily indoctrinated.
Yes, GenZ has accepted from their teachers that tyranny is preferred.
Yes, GenZ has accepted from their teachers that the U.S. is a rotten country and must be destroyed.
Yes, GenZ has accepted from their teachers woke.

The piece that GenZ rejected is leftwing wokeism, such as that men can be women. It's too far. People can't accept a lie that big.

So generally tyrannical, woke right, the question then becomes what form of tyranny does a woke GenZ rightist seek and desire?

Woke left is going to go for a tin pot communist.
But woke right is going to go for a tin pot monarch.

That is just where we now find ourselves, having given our children over to the state so the state can teach children that government is God.

We have lost GenZ to tyranny. If the Communists don't murder us, GenZ will. God save the King.

Oh, oh! There is an Ear Worm knocking loudly on my front door. He’s trying to push his way in!!

“Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the Feast of Stephen
When the snow lay ‘round about
Deep and crisp and even
Brightly shone the moon that night
Though the frost was cruel
When a poor man came inside
Gathering winter fuel ...”

But woke right is going to go for a tin pot monarch.

A whole lot of monarchies, including historically powerful monarchies, have been less tyrannical than our present bureaucratic "Democrat Republic".

Why must a monarch be a "tin pot" monarch? Most prefer a nice gold crown, if they can afford it.

Relying on the emergence of a “good king” is a chancy prospect at best. Kings are, by their very nature, neither better nor worse than than their contemporary subjects, and for the most part, are not subject to recall, beyond either regicide or abdication of the crown.

An elected representative republic is not necessarily an improvement on any heretically selected ruler, especially so if nepotism becomes a feature within the representative republic, and “elected” is merely an euphemism for “no challengers permitted”.

” A whole lot of monarchies, including historically powerful monarchies, have been less tyrannical than our present bureaucratic “Democrat Republic”. “

Yeah, this is the exact sliding scale fallacy that GenZ relies on. And yes I know they are not alone there have been a lot of others who have wanted a king in the background for many decades.

Liberty is outmoded is the fashionable statement anymore. So which form of tyranny maybe murders the least people? Well that’s the tyranny for me is the belief.

We could have a free government that doesn’t kill its own people, but yeah eff them terrible Founders no I don’t want to know how the progressives ruined certain parts of American governance let’s just have this other thing instead of Liberty. That is way too much work I need to watch muh football. Liberty is sooooooooooo 200 years ago. Tyranny is new, tyranny is shiny, tyranny is clean. Tyranny is hip and with it. Tyranny is on point.

I’ll go look in the mirror now and say to myself “You want freedom? Ok, Boomer.”

If we were on the other side of eternity, we could have the most hardcore socialism, fascism or communism and everything would be fine.

It’s because of man’s heart that we can’t have any of that.

Prior generations gave us a taste of a King, America had a president for life who died in his 4th term, if he had been healthier, who knows what would have been left when he was through.

I think in general I agree with your sentiments.

The problem is, GenZ has been deeply steeped in hollywood culture. They foolishly believe all kings will be Aragorn cause that’s what they learned in 9 hours across three blurays. There are no bad kings, I never saw that on Netflix!

Monarchies are not necessarily tyrannical. That was what Magna Carta was about. Democracies and Democratic Republics are not inherently free. There are limited monarchies and limited republics. The question, what rights are reserved to families and individuals, and by what mechanisms. Even Caesar’s Rome, with its paterfamilias, would not remove a daughter from a family because she wants to be called a boy, and have her sexual organs stifled or removed. Massachusetts will, though.

“...King Arthur...”

What is a good king? No matter what, some of every decision a king makes, just like congress or the POTUS, is not going to be appreciated. In time, with a little prodding from the media, it will be neccessary to overthrow or assassinate the king.

The only difference between a manarchy and a repuiblic is that the people have more say in a republic. A king is in for life. A politician in most cases isn’t. You can’t vote out a king. And with more people in the line of decision making, there is a greater possibility of getting it right. It may slow it, but in time it can be straightened out if by nothing more than the voting booth.

My father thought so, telling me the absolute best form of government was a beneficial dictator. The problem he said, was that AFTER the death of such a person, the one following him was frequently a very poor ruler and everything the dictator did to help his people fell apart.

Yep. And for the system to work, one good king must be followed by another good king, etc.

Eventually the odds will catch up with you. And then you’ll end up with a dangerously incompetent king such as Tsar Nicholas II.

If I were forced to design a monarchy, I’d design one where the monarch had the power to delay policy (a temporary veto), but not make policy.

When FR used to have serious religion discussions I was surprised to find that the hard core Catholics were so European and pro-Monarchy, even to seeing America and its founding as a result of the renegade and wrong Protestants, a mistake, and that they harbor many ill feelings about the United States.

By voting we have a chance of getting a really great president like the great Donald Trump. But we can get a congress of slime that makes it nearly impossible to do great things. And the potential of electing a Democrat whose soul purpose is destroying a great nation.

The days we can’t vote out Congressmen and Senators either. Very rare.

Because it’s a fantasy to think the next king will be good.

“Constitutional” Republic

Fine. The point still stands. Five judges, and dominant political parties (as during FDR) or one easily expansive amendment (14th, for instance) can open the doors to tyranny as well as an evil king.
