Leaders of the governing pro-independence parties in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will meet in Cardiff on Monday to sign a joint declaration calling for independence referendums, two days after President Donald Trump said he would "love" to see a unified Ireland.
As of Sunday, Scottish First Minister John Swinney of the SNP, Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth of Plaid Cymru, and Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill of Sinn Fein are set to sign a memorandum of understanding calling for referendums on their nations' constitutional futures.
The three will meet as party leaders rather than in their government roles.
The gathering marks the first time pro-independence parties have simultaneously held power across all three devolved nations, following Plaid Cymru's breakthrough as the largest party in the Welsh Senedd in May.
The meeting comes two days after Trump, sitting next to Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin at Farmleigh House in Dublin, broke with decades of U.S. neutrality on Northern Ireland's constitutional status. "I don't want to cause any problems, but I'd love to see it unified," Trump told reporters, adding that unification was inevitable and might as well happen now.
Trump later acknowledged at the U.S. ambassador's residence that the question had no simple answer before traveling to his Doonbeg golf resort for the Irish Open.
The Northern Ireland Act 1998, which implements provisions of the Good Friday Agreement that helped end three decades of sectarian conflict known as the Troubles, authorizes Britain's secretary of state for Northern Ireland to call a border poll.
The law requires the secretary to call one if it appears likely that a majority of voters in Northern Ireland would support leaving the United Kingdom and joining a united Ireland. Previous American presidents avoided taking sides.

Serves the UK right. Over a hundred years of mismanagement. They lost the Empire, now the home islands are going to Balkanize themselves. But at least they have a ton of Muslims now.
3 new flavors of islamocommist nations. As if the Caliphate of Uk wasn’t bad enough.
But would England be allowed to fly its flag?

True that.
Now here’s the interesting thing. We are going down that exact same path. The UK is just ahead of us on that path.
Will we learn from the UK’s mistakes?
Not a chance.
