Welcome to the Far Right
American Spectator ^ | 09/08/2026 | Chris Jansen

On Sunday, Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland (“AfD”) won a landslide victory in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, taking roughly 44 percent of the vote and more than doubling the total of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats.

Or, as readers of the American press learned, the “far right” had won a major victory.

AP News declared, “Germany shocked by far-right election triumph.” The Reuters headline: “Far-right win leaves Germany’s Merz shaken.” NBC News: “Far-right Alternative for Germany party wins big in regional election but falls short of majority.” And of course, NPR: “Germany’s far-right achieves an electoral breakthrough.”

Well, this is certainly troubling, isn’t it? A far-right (in one description, “Nazi-affiliated”) party surging in German elections… we’ve seen this before! So what exactly are these radicals proposing, I wondered. Race laws? Jewish oppression? The Fourth Reich?

It’s almost as if you can’t trust the mainstream media to report fairly on political issues.

As it turns out, opinion polls show the issues that drove the AfD’s victory were peace in Europe, economic security, and restoring a Germany for Germans by ending mass immigration, especially from Islamic countries. Certainly not a left-wing platform, but pretty far from the far right. It’s almost as if you can’t trust the mainstream media to report fairly on political issues.

But maybe I’m not being cynical enough. Perhaps it was simply the media’s click-hungry weakness for sensationalism, exaggerating any break with the status quo as “far”-something.

I decided to perform a little experiment. I asked Google to search the New York Times website for the phrase “far right.” It returned roughly 79,000 results. Then I searched for “far left” and got 14,000 hits. (Even that comparison exaggerates the Times’s enthusiasm for the latter expression. Scan the results for “far left” and one repeatedly encounters the phrase not in the Times‘s own voice but inside quotation marks, attributed to Donald Trump or someone in his administration.) If the mainstream media is to be believed, then America and Europe are suffering from a remarkable political asymmetry. The far right is everywhere, while the far left is mostly something Republicans claim exists.

Has it been determined that they actually won? I read last night that mail in voting changed the results.

They ended up first. The question is by how much.

44% is huge landslide in Germany with proportional representation.

Well, when in company one enjoys tweaking, try to remember to say “the KKK-affiliated Democrat party,” when referencing anyone who is a Democrat.

I’ve asked a number of Lefty Europeans to define “Far” Right. What positions SPECIFICALLY. Don’t give me insinuations and mutterings about Hitler, Nazis, Fascists, blah blah blah. Tell me SPECIFICALLY what positions are merely right of center and what positions are “Far” right.

They can’t. They have no definition. Whatever position they claim makes you “far” right shifts over time and what was previously “Far” right 5 years ago is mainstream now.

Its not a definition. Its just a smear.

The AfD is not militaristic, has no desire to expand national borders or indeed to get involved in military adventures at all.

Their leader is a lesbian woman married to a woman from Sri Lanka. So they obviously don’t hate gays.

They don’t even argue against legal residents/citizens from different ethnic groups who obey the laws and contribute to society (ie pay taxes instead living on the public dole).

But they’re against Gaia worship and they’re against open borders and they say they need to at least somewhat curb the socialism. Thus they’re “Far” right and “extremists” - according to the Yurp political establishment.

Wikipedia defines Breitbart as a “Far Right News Website.”

You can’t hate these people enough.

I didn’t know that. So I guess they are not all that “far right”.

I think every single MSM outlet - CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, etc. - said that “Far Right” party AfD won the election. Every single one of them. Yet if you listen to AfD politicians, they are remarkably centrist. They aren’t even that “Right” much less “Far Right.” They want sanity in immigration. That’s it.

I guess media owners aren’t very sophisticated. The best they can do is call anyone they don’t want to win a nazi.
