The federal workforce has contracted by 336,000 employees since President Donald Trump took office, reflecting his administration’s drive to reduce the size of the government bureaucracy.
Federal government employment fell by another 5,000 in August to 2.674 million, the Labor Department said Friday. That is down from 3.010 million in January 2025, a decline of 11.2 percent.
Over the past year, federal payrolls have shrunk by 242,000 workers. Excluding the U.S. Postal Service, the decline was even larger, at approximately 251,000. Postal Service employment increased by around 9,000 during the same period, partially offsetting the broader reduction.
The contraction has slowed considerably this year. Federal employment is down by just 11,000 since January, indicating that the steepest cuts occurred during the first year of Trump’s second term.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has described the shift away from government employment and spending as the “reprivatization” of the economy. “Wall Street has done great, it is time for Main Street to do well and small businesses need to drive what I call the reprivatization away from government spending,” Bessent said during his confirmation hearing last year.
The reversal of the Biden-era trend of expanding federal employment is even more striking. If federal employment had continued growing at its Biden-era pace, it would employ roughly 3.06 million workers today, nearly 386,000 more than it actually does.
The decline in federal employment stands in contrast to continued hiring in the private economy. Private-sector payrolls rose by 127,000 in August, more than double the 53,000 increase expected by economists. Total nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000, while the unemployment rate held at 4.1 percent.

Hopefully most are in the D.C. area. Without jobs those people will have to move. Could it turn Virginia red? If they restored the district to it’s original boundaries that would take away a lot of democrat votes. Something tells me it would be a judicial issue, not one involving congress. Would the republicans do it? The argument would have to do with taking away votes from slave owners.

Don’t break out the bubbly unless there are stats on the reduction of the government contractor workforce around the DC area. It’s far easier to create contractor positions and put them in government and leased buildings than GS and FS. And it’s more money for the contractor companies if they are located in contractor facilities. Almost all of my Bureau’s HR staff before I retired were contractors. The housing market certainly isn’t collapsing here.
Double it and I will be mildly tolerant.
What Reagan (and Bush) did was set off the government contractor flurry in the late 80’s/early 90’s. You’re still paying, just not for GS positions, but for contractor company overhead, leadership and administration as well.

The national debt has to be cut and useless Federal employees is a way to cut. Meanwhile, The US added 162,000 jobs in August, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly jobs report—far more than the 55,000 jobs economists expected.
I used to work for FedGov but realized most employees were stuck in dead end jobs so I got out and am much better off financially.
Real government jobs that do real things don’t pay well…you have to be in a desk job in Washington to make the bucks.
well that’s a start, about 40-50% more to go, lots of dead wood. I know some real skilled arborists, cut out the dead wood quick !
Trump should sell off more unused buildings etc too. Or turn them into some thing useful that would make a profit.
