A coalition of British peace and faith organisations has launched a campaign demanding that the Government rule out any return to military conscription, as heightened tensions with Russia intensify debate over Britain’s military preparedness.
Thirteen organisations, including ForcesWatch, the Peace Pledge Union and Quakers in Britain, are backing a petition calling for ministers to reject compulsory military service or any form of national service involving the armed forces.
The campaign comes as the UK faces renewed discussion over the size and resilience of its armed forces. The Conservatives have previously proposed a national service scheme, while Labour has expanded opportunities for military gap years. Britain currently has no system of conscription.
Emma Sangster of ForcesWatch, speaking on behalf of the coalition, said compulsory service would place unacceptable constraints on young people.
“Conscription is now a threat held over young people in the UK. People talk patronisingly of national service being good for young people, as if it didn’t pose significant risks to their physical and mental health, and impose the moral burdens of warfare on them.
She added: “We do not accept that militarised security will bring real human security. We do not accept that young people in this country should be drafted into its service through compulsory measures. It’s hard to believe that anyone would want that for their children and future generations.”
The dispute comes against a backdrop of growing confrontation between Britain and Moscow. The UK has handed Ukraine blueprints for components used in Storm Shadow missiles, prompting a sharp response from the Kremlin.

The UK couldn’t even take the Malvinas back if Argentina decided to retake them. Forget about going up against Russia.
The British should worry less about the Ruskies, and more about the muzzies in their backyard.
What next generation? Their birthrates are cratering.
You mean they won’t want to go marching up and down the square?

If online comments mean anything, no brit wants to fight for a country that both hates them and is actively replacing them.
Good ol Russia. The bull in the international china shop. Pun not intended.
Weakness invites aggression. Europe is weak, especially UK.
Here’s YouTube historian Mark Felton talking about a possible return of conscription to the UK. It’s worth a glance just for the comments alone.
As SpaceBar noted, the comments are brutal.

Maybe if Britain was more reluctant to fight in 1914, they wouldn’t be in this mess today?
Re my post #9.
Sorry. The viewer comments now seem to be missing from the link. Could it be that you must be signed in to view the comments?
It ain't 1914 but they're acting like it when they were able to mobilize an army.
If Britain and Germany were allies back then, it would have saved the world a lot of grief.
The UK is toast already
Here's an interesting article from a few years ago that addresses a key reason the British Muslim families have an attitude towards the Royal Military Establishment: The British Army has a history of fighting Islamic opponents.
With this attitude perking in the hearts and minds of British Islamic communities, the English nation seems to harbor a viper at its breast.
