On today's CNN This Morning, host Audie Cornish decided former Trump White House press secretary Sean Spicer was fair game for a cheap shot. She soon learned otherwise.
Discussing the search for a successor to departing press secretary Karoline Leavitt, Cornish contrasted Leavitt’s tenure with Spicer’s.
“She didn’t become a national joke like a Sean Spicer,” Cornish declared.
CNN's Sara Fischer later undercut Cornish's “joke” crack. “Sean Spicer has his own show,” she noted. “He’s been able to create a media career out of it.”
By the end of the segment, a somewhat chastened Cornish circled back. “And Sean Spicer, I learned my lesson. Doing good. Congratulations.”

CNN host Audie Cornish gets schooled on her nasty crack about Sean Spicer.
Ping to Liberal Media Criticism list.
I don’t even remember Sean Spicer. Let alone whether he was a ‘joke’ or not.
Lefties are weird.
All I remember is that SNL had a woman in drag playing him (the vulgar and ugly Melissa McCarthy). It was essentially one joke dragged out over several excruciating minutes.
I didn’t know that Sean Spicer had become a “national joke.” I thought that title belonged to Karine Jean-Pierre.
I think Dr. Jill has hired KJP as a home health assistant to handle Autopen Joe’s bedpans as her experience in the White House was trying to clean up Joe’s messes on a daily basis.
Of those 4 on screen, who is Audie Cornish?
At least she took it back; a rare thing for a CNN person.
Sean Spicer as press secretary was not a good fit. The press ate him alive, but that’s on them, not him. I think he was shocked at their behavior, and he had the unfortunate habit of turning bright pink when they attacked him, a physiological response over which he has no control. Common among us redheads.
Good point: Cornish is a confirmed liberal: she used to be a NPR host! But she is pretty decent compared to other liberal media hosts.
Audie’s in the middle in the white jacket, gesturing to Mike Dubke.
How long did they keep that insufferable muppet in there for Biden?
