My understanding is that they wipe with their left hand (so offering a left hand for a handshake is a serious faux pas with Arabs). In what twisted mental universe is using toilet paper worse than hand-wiping?

Using toilet paper destroys all of the trees. The muslims figured that out after they destroyed the vast Sahara Forest.
I spent many years devoted to toilet paper.
After visiting Japan I installed a bidet and consider it a minor tragedy when I have to use tp.
I’m guessing these Muslims use water to wash their butts but I have no idea.

I worked in Indonesia for awhile. The place we were staying at had a toilet upstairs, but the typical hole in the floor with a hose in the basement (no TP down there).
In the offices at the job site they had toilets. With signs depicting a person standing on the toilet rim and squatting with the red x over it. The toilets would break when the locals would use them, never seeing a toilet before. I had no problem squatting over the hole if my co-worker was using the upstairs, but made sure I had TP down there!
Their hand (yes, you read that right) + water. They use their left hand, which is why it is very bass etiquette in Muslim countries to do anything (eg eat) with the left hand.
