South Carolina is poised to hold the first Democratic presidential nominating contest in 2028 after the Democratic National Committee’s powerful rules committee voted to keep the state at the front of the line.
The move, recommended by the rules committee Friday and set to be presented to the full DNC at its summer meeting next month, settles a monthslong battle among a handful of states.
Nevada and New Hampshire, which also vied to be the lead-off state, will hold the second and third nominating contests, respectively. New Mexico, Michigan and Virginia will round out the first six contests prior to Super Tuesday.
The move officially pushes Iowa out of the early voting window altogether. It had served as the opening contest for both parties up until 2024, when Democrats pushed it back after issues with the 2020 caucuses.
The new calendar significantly changes the calculus for Democratic presidential candidates, replacing two heavily white states at the top with states with more diverse populations, while still preserving three of the four traditional early state contests. And adding two more states before Super Tuesday means there will be more delegates up for grabs for candidates to win before March.
The race to kick off the Democrats’ presidential nominating contest was hard-fought and drawn-out, with states first pitching DNC rules committee members during a January meeting in Puerto Rico and continuing to press hard in the months since.

Give us kamala!
Persistently Pandering Pinkos.
Wonder if Iowa and NH will just accept this?
Good. Does that mean we can get rid of the useless ethanol in our gas?
They won’t accept it, and they cannot stop it.
How White of them !
Nevada Hispanic community will not appreciate the blacks going first. NH state law says they must be first. The DNC will not allow any candidate who campaigns in NH to participate in debates.
I think all primaries and caucuses should be on the same day.
Especially since some states are not finished counting before the next state votes.
Taking out the Commies.
There were a lot of good GOP candidates in 2016, but it came down to Trump or else one of Sean Hannity’s monsters, ie Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, or Ben Carson….Hannity’s pandering affirmative action guests who were not ready for prime time. Rubio wanted a 30% tax bracket at under $100,000 income, Cruz wanted a 10% flat tax with a zillion deductions, Carson had no experience, & basically, he was Hannity’s puppet.
Trump was the only one left who could beat Hillary…..but after getting the nomination, he chose Hannity’s Mike Pence, & let Hannity hijack his presidency after he got elected, which is why Trump lost the midterms & reelection in 2020. Now, Biden was so bad, that Trump got a second chance, but now he has completely caved in to the same Hannitized agenda that caused Mitt Romney to lose any easy election in 2012….an essential election. GOP had the right candidate, but he chose Hannity’s clown Paul Ryan, ran far right on taxes & a war monger….& lost.
Ron DeSantis had to win a primary early or else drop out. Does that make sense….a mainstream, good, candidate having to win out of mainstream states like New Hampshire, Iowa or South Carolina……or else drop out before getting to states you could win.
Does it not make sense for a political to find out what its members really think across the country by having every primary election on the same day, then having a run off of top two or three candidates? 2016 and 2024 would have looked at lot different if everybody across the country voted on the same day and we got rid of this New Hampshire, Iowa, South Carolina, Super Tuesday bs.?
Will the RNC follow this lead or can they make their own schedule?
Hard to believe Kamala, Buttigieg, AOC are Democrat front runners. Joe Manchin……old, straight white guys are not even a factor in Democrat party.
Last I heard Iowa was still counting the Democrat caucus votes from 2024.
Lol.
The caucus system was developed to supposedly end the era of “smoke filled back rooms” that became increasingly controversial in the 1960s.
Carter campaign knew how to game this system, and the Obama gang hornswoggled past the Clinton people. It was a thoroughly buggered system, just as bad as smoke filled back rooms. The Republicans followed all this closely and copied it, naturally.
Both the RNC and DNC are “private” organizations and at the end of the day can choose any candidate they want. Voting means nothing, as anyone can figure out.
Nominate Camel la, please.
The USA needs a word salad pontificater.
Where’s my SS tax cut?
Last I checked, I’m still paying the same tax on our SS as the last years.
NOT a happy camper every time someone claims: “NO tax on SS”
[Total BS]
NO! I want to see a cat fight between AOC and Kamalalala.
Can you imagine the debate?
South Carolina? It’s a strong move against democrat commies...
