HOAs And Western Civilization: From Karen To Rambo
Flopping Aces ^ | 07-14-26 | Vince

Like most Americans, I hate HOAs. We’ve all heard stories of Homeowner’s Associations fining some veteran for flying an American flag in their yard or watched videos of some Karen or Biff playing the role of HOA cops. But as much as a pain in the ass HOAs are, the reality is, most of the people who move into those communities do so, at least in part, because of them. Why would someone subject themselves to the petty tyrannies of HOAs? Because for them, having a community of a particular standard is important.

I’ve lived in neighborhoods where people basically have junkyards in their front yards, others were neighbors' parties until all hours of the night, and one where someone let her rottweilers roam the neighborhood freely.

Some people would say living in an HOA is overkill when dealing with such problems. Maybe, but the reality is I’d prefer not having to confront unruly or anti-social neighbors on a regular basis. Such things not only impact the quality of life, but they also impact home values too.

The funny thing is, sometimes choosing to live with an HOA is like living in a democratically governed country.

John Locke understood this “The only way whereby any one divests himself of his Natural Liberty, and puts on the bonds of Civil Society is by agreeing with other Men to joyn and unite into a Community, for their comfortable, safe, and peaceable living one amongst another, in a secure Enjoyment of their Properties, and a greater Security against any that are not of it.

That is Western civilization. It exists because citizens entered into a bargain, a bond, where they willingly gave up a sliver of their freedom in order to enjoy a fuller, more compelling life than they could have had if they were forced to spend their entire lives defending themselves and their families against everyone else.

But what happens when that bond is broken? When that government, whose entire existence is based upon protecting the rights of citizens, ceases to fulfill its obligations or worse, works against them?

That is what we are seeing in most of the West today. Seemingly everywhere we see governments betray their citizens for the benefit of foreigners whose ancestors were never part of that original compact of compromise.

The traditional way Westerners dealt with such failures was the ballot box. But what if that no longer works? Here, the left has rigged elections for decades, and their backstop against any reforms is a treasonous federal judiciary. In Europe, the EU, doing its best, Henry II – Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest? – encourages member governments to sideline or eliminate any candidate or party that might fix their failures. What’s more, it forces member nations to import and support millions of the very immigrants who are so much of the problem in the first place. And in the UK, which exited the EU to escape Brussels’ tentacles, the government sacrificed 250,000 English girls to Muslim men while Brits face jail for talking about it.

This is not sustainable, and I think it leads to bloody civil war in numerous states across the West. It won’t be quick, and it won’t be clean.

In Europe, the danger is Islam. It has waited too long to react, and now there is no Charles Martel or John Sobieski to rescue it. With Tours and Vienna, the enemy was external, and the battle lines were easy to see.

Today, however, across the continent, they are not. In Germany it’s said that even the leftist PM understands they can’t build a professional army because there would be too many Muslim men involved and they don’t want to give them weapons. Muslims are today anywhere from mid-single digits to above 10% in virtually every Western European country. They rarely assimilate, even after generations, but they nonetheless are very much woven into the economies, from Uber drivers to hotel maids to waiters to bodega owners and more. The more they grow, the more they push Islam & Sharia.

But I don’t think this civil war will start in the form of groups of vigilantes going around targeting Muslims. I think the catalyst will be governments jailing anyone who says things or posts things counter to the “Diversity is our Strength” propaganda. It’s been going on in the UK for years.

As a result, many white Brits don’t care about being called racists.

Unfortunately, too many “Rambos” have become petty thugs protecting overt thugs.

In Europe, the danger is Islam.

Look around, it's THE danger here as well.

“Why would someone subject themselves to the petty tyrannies of HOAs?”

Because HOAs restrict freedom... Freedom to be pigs, to be an eyesore in the neighborhood, party all night disturbing neighbors, etc.

In other words not tolerate antisocial behavior.

We all love freedom, but the worst type of hell is freedom to do whatever the hell you want, anywhere, anytime.

These are problems better solved by police and local government than HOAs.

Most jurisdictions already have leash laws, noise ordinances, and dumping rules.

Love this subject. I lived in 2 of them. The first one was 50% rentals. It had one of those nazis on the board who wore a Hillary t-shirt. I showed up to the next one wearing a Trump hat.
The other one was for over 55’s. Those meetings are pretty cool and 14 of the 60 units are rentals who accept under-55’s. All our issues come from the rentals. The board deals with them quickly. It’s boring but safe.

If you don’t like a Homeowner’s Association, you can move out, get on the board, go to board meetings to complain, and try to get the rules changed.

There is this one lady who comes to the board meeting to complain all the time. She found out that she had more power not being on the board than being on it.

Liberty is the goal.

It is not all freedom/license.

Liberty is?

...never lived in an HOA neighborhood until we moved in some dozen years ago...HOA is keen on keeping yards neat and grass well mowed and maintained...anyone have a problem with that? HOA CCRs state each house must have at least 2 foundation plantings....no one has had any problem with that....Trees must be trimmed and neat....no one has any “issues” with that...wanna park your junk car on cinder blocks in the driveway or front lawn...? no way....!!! our previous neighborhood has gone 50 per cent rental, and it looks it!!

Any government from the federal on down to the smallest local entity that is run by democrats is nothing more than a despicable, insufferable HOA.

Confession time. I am the president of an HOA.

Worse, I am the Chair of a Public Improvement District that is like a super HOA, overseeing an area of over 2500 homes with a budget over a million a year.

This was not intentional. I ran for a seat on my HOA board after a confrontation with the HOA over weeds. At the time they would fine you for a weed over 3” tall. Here in New Mexico that can virtually happen overnight. I wanted to make sure my HOA was not run by Nazis. I became a member of the PID board by being on the HOA board.

All that being said, our HOA is primarily focused on protecting our property values. We issue warnings with a two week window to fix the issue. Everyone gets a copy of the rules and regs when they purchase a home in the neighborhood. We make sure the properties are maintained. When I first got on the board, our association - with about 350 homes - had over 40 open collections going on. As of our last meeting we had 4.

Back to the Public Improvement District - we oversee the maintenance of the public areas (medians, trails, parks, etc.) - in our district. Most of the district looks great. There are 8 HOAs in the district and ONE area without an HOA. That area looks like crap. There are TALL weeds in many yards, junked cars in driveways and yards, most homes need to be painted, etc. The value of homes in that neighborhood are about 25% less than the rest of the PID.

So, for all of you anti-HOA people, why would the area WITHOUT an HOA - you know, the area you guys say you like - be valued so much less? I mean if EVERYONE hates HOAs, you’d think that the one area without an HOA would be MORE desirable. Right?

Liberty is a synonym for freedom. It’s just the Latin form of the word - “libertas”.

When you’re over 55 boring and safe is good!

There’s an X-Files episode set in an HOA community where a creature emerges from the sewer and kills the rule breakers.

We live in a townhome that has an HOA. Monthly dues are about $80/month and includes lawn care for all units, common areas and a nice pool. The HOA board is made up of volunteers without pay, with the exception of the treasurer. She just gets her monthly fee waived.

Most HOAs in many states have hired companies to run manage the HOA. Their fees and fines they impose for even minor violations are huge and out of line.

Many of these HOAs are set up by developers are run by a firm they set up. These are just scams to milk the home owners out of as much money as possible.
