As new law looms, allies defend Gov. DeSantis’ CAIR ban before appeals court.
The case could test how far states can go in labeling and defunding groups they deem security risks.
A conservative legal coalition is urging an appeals court to let Gov. Ron DeSantis bar the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) from receiving Florida contracts, funding and benefits.
Their argument: Florida has the power to refuse public support for organizations it says have ties to terrorism.
In an amicus brief, Holtzman Vogel lawyers Mark Pinkert and Jason Torchinsky advised the court to rule in favor of DeSantis’ appeal of a March 4 injunction, which blocked his December executive order denying CAIR state or local contracts, employment or funding and pressuring third parties to do the same.
Pinkert and Torchinsky filed the brief on behalf of the National Jewish Advocacy Center, Middle East Forum and Network Contagion Research Institute.
“CAIR is not the benevolent civil rights organization that it purports to be or that the district court believed it to be,” the brief argued, contending that Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood created CAIR to support their work in the United States.

He is also the one who issued a ruling in 2021 that blocked enforcement of parts of Florida's anti-riot law.
One thing I’ll say about DeSantis is that he picks his battles well. He does something like this. Liberals go wild and make all kinds of accusations about his legislation, many of them false. They may find some liberal judge to rule against DeSantis. But ultimately, DeSantis usually wins.
Fine.
Governor DeSantis is a lawyer by trade, he’ll knowhow to handle this.
Take it to the state supreme court and steam roll bammies pos appointed judge.
Cair is on of those organizations that seeks to use America’s freedoms against it and to their advantage.
That in and of itself should be grounds to dissolve any organization that seeks to do so and begin deportation proceedings for anyone involved.
CAIR is the equivalent of the 1950s communist party
It is a foreign-backed, foreign-funded political organization whose goal is the overthrow of the US Constitution. It wears the mask of religion.
It should be completely banned in the USA
The REAL root problem is immigrants coming here and refusing to assimilate.
Many come here and bring their culture with them, take advantage of all the benefits and refuse to adopt the American way of life....right down to refusing not only to speak english but refusing to even learn it.
If I had my way, immigrants couldn’t remain here permanently until they could prove at least a basic aptitude of the english language......speaking it AND reading it.
I think being conversant in English used to be a requirement.
This is the kind of case an 0bama judge would have a hard time not sticking his nose in.
Well it sure isn’t now....spending 5 minutes in any Walmart in the country will confirm that.....and that includes the employees.
When an English speaking person says something to me in Walmart I’ve taken to replying “at this point, I’m just thrilled your speaking english”.
To which the reaction is always “AINT IT THE TRUTH?” or some similar reaction.
I cant tell you how many times I’ve been behind some immigrant in a checkout line in a store and they can’t even speak enough English to communicate with the cashier.
I’ve been kinda sick of it for a while now.
The next generation will learn English. Won’t they?
Considering how weak the next American generation seems to be (in my observation anyway) more than likely it’ll be the other way round.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the boom boom boom of rap music while stopped at a traffic light only to discover it’s some white kid slouched down in the drivers seat with his hat on sideways.
I guess that’s what comes from public schools indoctrinated white kids that they should be ashamed of their race.
White kids put rap on the map.
