An alligator-filled moat guards this medieval castle in a tiny Texas town

Nestled in the countryside just outside Bellville, Texas... Newman's Castle is a delightfully eccentric experience and completely unlike anything else in the Lone Star State.

Having lived in Italy and Spain in his early 20s, Mike Newman was heavily inspired by European castles, and in 1998, he began constructing a castle of his own, making it his home in 2007.

What started as a personal passion project eventually became a public attraction.

Over the years, Newman transformed the property into a fantasy-like fortress using traditional medieval architectural concepts. It features a working drawbridge, a moat that allegedly has alligators, towers, a banquet hall, a dungeon and more.

The castle has also become a popular venue for weddings, Renaissance-style events, photoshoots, and private parties.

Tours are typically offered six days a week. Tickets are required and can be purchased at newmanscastle.com. Is one day not enough? Overnight stays are available too!

Mike Newman passed away in 2024, but his nephew Chad Welty took over operations for the castle, ensuring that Mike's legacy endures.

Bellville, a small town with just about 4,200 residents, sits right between Austin and Houston. It's also home to Newman's Bakery, which was owned by Mike Newman and makes for a great post-castle pit-stop.

It’s all fun and games until a visitor falls into the moat.
😕

Oh, that looks great. I wonder what part of the building code was consulted for placing alligators in the moat?

Maybe it was more of a “Field of Dreams” thing.

"You know, I have one simple request, and that is to have alligators with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!"

When I was a kid, one of my great-aunt/great-uncle couples had a winter place (mobile home) in Florida. The day before we got there, animal control had hauled a gator out of the aptly named water hazard in their park’s golf course.

“...a moat that allegedly has alligators...”

Good PR.

In this part of Texas, any standing water ends up with alligators. EVERY golf course has them too.

I came here to say that Bellville also has a Trump Store and Trump Cafe.

But I think they just closed down last week.

AI Overview As of May 2026, the Trump-themed restaurant and store locations in Bellville, Texas, have shut down or re-branded following legal issues, trademark disputes with the Trump Organization, and the owner’s legal troubles. The locations, previously known as Trump Burger/Trump Cafe, were heavily decorated with merchandise and sold branded food items.Status of Trump-Themed Locations in Bellville:Trump Cafe/Trump Burger: Reports from April and May 2026 indicate the restaurants have closed, rebranded, or are facing imminent closure due to the owner being arrested.Previous Setup: The locations were known for featuring Trump memorabilia, including T-shirts, hats, and flags, as well as burgers branded with the Trump name. Background: The establishments were not affiliated with or endorsed by Donald Trump, but rather operated by a fan, leading to a cease-and-desist letter from the Trump Organization in 2025.It is highly likely that the specific “Trump Store” / Café branded merchandise experience on Main Street is no longer operating as it once did.

Ah, it’s built in the county, so it’s not subject to code.

is a delightfully eccentric experience

Its not going to be delightfully eccentric for the first drunk who gets liquored up and decides to go swimming in the moat after hours.

I've visited this castle.

I wouldn't want to live there. it's very "castle-y"

One cool thing is they have working trebuchet that flings boulders into the nearby lake.
