It’s a few days after the election this November, and the results have become clear: Democrats have netted the four seats they need to claim a Senate majority.
But then there’s a disturbance in the force: Senate Republicans and President Donald Trump persuade Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) to switch parties or at least become an independent to ensure Republicans retain power in the chamber.
It’s a scenario that’s becoming less fantastical by the day.
The political environment is curdling for Republicans, and the quiet campaign to lure Fetterman across the aisle is underway.
Trump has made the sell, offering his patented total and complete endorsement plus a financial windfall to the Pennsylvanian. A handful of Senate Republicans are also gently feeling out Fetterman and responding to his concerns over the prospect of defecting from the Democratic Party, multiple high-level GOP officials tell me.
If Fetterman does flip, according to officials who were given anonymity to talk about sensitive matters, it will be thanks in large part to his deepening friendship with a pair of senators and their high-profile spouses: Sen. Dave McCormick (R-Pa.), and his wife Dina, and Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), and her husband, Wesley.
But the first-term Democrat — who’s infuriated his party with his harder line on immigration and staunch support for Israel, Trump nominees, government funding bills and most recently the president’s ballroom — isn’t yet persuaded.
“I’m not changing,” Fetterman told me in an interview Friday when I asked if he was ruling out both becoming a Republican or turning independent. “I’m a Democrat, and I’m staying one. “
Yet, at least in private, he’s not totally rejecting dropping his “D.”

So we’ll have a slovenly Susan Collins?
They shouldn’t bother. Leave him where he is to point to within the Dem party. He’s better there speaking against his own side.
Man, they really are thick. We don’t need another one who would vote liberal. We have enough as it is.
Here is the thing with Fetterman. I am just some guy on the internet, and you guys could call bullshit, but he is a decent man. My wife knows his wife personally. She runs a non-profit here, and I have never met a more delightful, warm, engaging woman. John does have a moral center. I know people he grew up with. He is a regular Joe, really. Will I vote for him, who knows? but as a man, a Father and human being... you could do worse.
My fearless prediction: Fetterman will either stay Democrat or become an Independent, and caucus with the Democrats.
No help to the Republicans either way.
He’s not a Republican.
Nothing will be flipped.
This is Poser Rage Bait to trigger D-Rats.
Good post, yours. I know a woman who knows Fetterman’s wife. My friend would agree with everything you said there.
I would like it if the Republicans left Fetterman alone. He’s a moderating force within the Democrat party.
And now a side point: The radical Democrats won’t leave Fetterman alone. I’m sure they’ll primary him in 2028. Maybe with that awful Congresswoman Summer Lee.
His wife may be nice, but she also is hard left.
His vote has already been “flipped” numerous times.
Most don’t expect Rs will need Fetterman, but if it gets close he may deny Donks a necessary vote like Manchin & Sinema.
This may seem outlandish to people who are immersed in partisan politics on the internet, but Pennsylvania is a unique political environment where party affiliation means very little.
Rule #1 in Pennsylvania Politics: Nothing is more important than Pennsylvania’s interests.
Most Freepers would probably be shocked at how many people in PA voted for Fetterman in 2022 and Trump in 2024.
Well Dr. Oz didn’t exactly come off as a “MAGA Candidate”.

Hey, that’s MY representative you’re talking about. She is as odious a piece-of-shit racist as there is and likely cannot win statewide; if the election took place in THIS probable disaster of a year and not 2028, that might be different.
Fetterman’s most likely primary opponent (most likely to be successful) is Conor Lamb. Lambykins ran against Fetterman in 2022, one of the few statewide primaries anywhere (in a “winnable” state) over the past 2 or 3 election cycles which Democrats *appeared* to allow to play out naturally instead of winnowing the field for their Chosen One.
In 2022 the big radical-left money was always on Fetterman while Lamb posed as a moderate. It wasn’t close.
In 2028 the roles will be reversed, with Fetterman as the common-sense “moderate” (LOL) and Lamby as the drooling radical nutjob — but still POSING as a moderate in time for the general election. If the GOP opposes either of them with some squishy nobody, or some completely asinine choice like Dr. Oz, the Dems will hold the seat quite easily.
“Most don’t expect Rs will need Fetterman....”
He won’t be of any real use to either party if/when the Democrats have the Senate majority starting in January. The Rats may not need his vote (they’ll still have Murkowski, Thune, maybe Cornyn, etc. to help when they need help) and why should Fetterman waste time voting with the losing (R) team?

Yep. I have friends in a suburban western Pennsylvania town whom I visit now and again. It’s a solid middle-class place. In 2020 there were Trump signs everywhere. Same in 2024.
But in 2022 many of those same houses had Fetterman signs out.
It's a done deal. I'm sure that Fetterman realizes this so he knows that he's one and out. He may decline to run for a second term.
Maybe Fetterman could eventually get a position in the next Republican administration.
UN Ambassador.
