In the middle of the Antarctic winter, during months of darkness when temperatures often dip below −30°C, the continent warmed dramatically.
In July and August 2024, temperatures in parts of East Antarctica rose by up to 28°C above average and stayed high for more than two weeks. To put that in perspective, a similar anomaly in the UK would push January temperatures into the mid-30°Cs.
In a recent study, colleagues and I show the Antarctica heatwave was not simply unusual weather. It was a rare atmospheric disturbance, amplified by human-caused climate change, offering a glimpse of what could become more common in the decades ahead.
This was not an isolated event. It followed a heatwave in March 2022, when temperatures in some Antarctic areas soared by nearly 40°C above average – one of the largest temperature anomalies ever recorded anywhere on the planet.
Together, these events point to a clear shift: extreme warming is no longer confined to traditionally vulnerable regions.
How the heatwave unfolded In 2024, the extraordinary winter heat began with a weakening of the Antarctic polar vortex – a band of strong winds high in the atmosphere that usually keeps cold air locked over the continent. In July 2024, this vortex became distorted, allowing unusual warming in the stratosphere, where temperatures rose by more than 15°C in early July, with another surge in early August.

Who was sitting around in Antarctica with a thermometer 25, 50, 75 years ago to measure if there were any heat waves like this before?
There reality is we have all these nice new fangled probes, satellites, etc that can monitor stuff like this on a micro-level that we’ve could never do until recently.
So is it really Global warming causing it or is it just normal Earth being Earth stuff we couldn’t measure before?

Okay. Now try putting it in fact. What did it actually rise to in Antarctica?
What crappy reporting.
First of all, Antarctica is a continent. That’s a large body of land thousands of miles across.
Secondly, to imply “Antarctica” (the whole continent) is warming up because a part of East Antarctica rose 28 degrees for two months (from what initial temperature they don’t say) means NOTHING to the West or Central Antarctica. It’s closer to a lie than sloppy journalism.
Both Florida and Alaska are in North America. Very different climates, but both are the same continent. Of course, Antarctica is straddling the South pole, so it is widely cold all over, usually.
But so is Canada. And it can be in 30s in Newfoundland and the 90s in Montreal, and the distance is less than from East to West Antarctica.

Explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, and those who followed after him. He was circa WWI. Permanent camps on the South Pole date back to the International Geophysical Year in the 1950s.
