Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket launched for third time ever today (April 19) -- but for the first time with previously flown hardware. Full Story: Space.com

Shortly after separation. the first stage of the rocket successfully landed on a droneship in the Atlantic Ocean.

The mission, called NG-3, attempted to deliver BlueBird 7, a direct-to-cellphone internet satellite, to low Earth orbit (LEO) but "the payload was placed into an off-nominal orbit. We are currently assessing and will update when we have more detailed information," according to Blue Origin.

NG-3 flew the same first-stage booster core that launched NG-2, but with new engines.

I went to the beach to watch this morning. Unfortunately the cloud cover blocked the view.

In other words it's probably a loss. Failed objective, unless they can figure a way to get it "nominal", which is rarely successful.

Gotta love the language they use to describe failures. e.g. "Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly" meaning "explosion".

"Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly"

That phrase was Elon Musk's idea of a joke ... I thought is was funny.

The first time ...

I wonder if history could have been different if the original John Glenn didn’t fall in the shower in 1988 and burst his eardrum

Actually “RUD” and similar phrases have been in use by the military since the 1970s.

JFK gave the word that Glenn wasn’t to fly again, because he could fail the next time. The USSR didn’t do that with Gagarin, but I think he died in a plane crash.

Anyway, apparently no one told Glenn this, he got tired of getting turned away from missions, and left NASA in 1964, running for Senate and serving there for a couple of decades.

Almost 35 years after JFK’s assassination, Glenn went to space aboard the Shuttle, said he was of more value because no one his age had flown in space yet.

His Shuttle launch. They overrode the hold and socked it to the firewall.

Similar phrases ... sure.

Did you, personally, hear “RUD” prior to SpaceX using the term?

4+ million pounds. Liquid methane is much easier to handle and maintain prior to launch than liquid hydrogen, is cheaper, has better specific impulse than RP-1. SpaceX Starship also uses that combo, and it has been catching on elsewhere.

SpaceX Falcon Heavy bests the NG by 650K, and is probably cheaper to launch, but while its side boosters have (I think) always landed successfully, the main booster is the ‘stretch’ version and has had problems with landings.

AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird 7 satellite. Some of that will buff right out.

NG-1 (January 16, 2025) failed to land. Blue Ring Pathfinder payload delivered to orbit.
NG-2 (November 13, 2025) deployed NASA’s ESCAPADE, successful booster landing.
NG-3 (April 19, 2026).

flashback/sidebar:

https://jakegarnlegacy.com

During his second term as a Senator, Garn became the head of the Senate appropriations committee that dealt with NASA. At a hearing of his subcommittee his bold opening remarks to NASA officials included, “My first question,” he said, “is when do I get to go on the space shuttle?”

After years of working with NASA, officials announced that Senator Jake Garn would join their November 1984, their 1985 Space Shuttle Discovery flight as a payload specialist. During the flight, he logged 108 orbits and 2.8 million miles making him the first public official to go to space. He is the only pilot in aviation history to have wings from the Navy, Air Force, and NASA.

The lauch and landing were a success. The satellite was deployed, but not exactly where it was supposed to be.

The phrase, yes, around 1991 while I was an aerospace contractor, when a rocket with some of our gear exploded shortly after launch. I don’t remember the acronym being used but it may have been.

Good start.

As of mid-April 2026, SpaceX has completed about 644 successful launches out of 656 total attempts across all of its rockets. That includes the Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Starship. For landings, SpaceX has achieved roughly 598 successful Falcon-family booster landings in 611 attempts. Some counts list only Falcon 9 boosters, which stand at around 581 successful Falcon 9 landings specifically. If you include only orbital-class rocket launches and booster landings: Successful launches: about 644 Successful booster landings: about 598
