Trump proposed a joint U.S.-Iran system to tax ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global energy flows.
The idea emerges amid fragile ceasefire negotiations and broader discussions on sanctions relief and nuclear constraints.
The proposal underscores the high economic stakes, with potential implications for oil prices, global trade, and regional stability.
President Trump has floated the prospect of a “joint venture” with the Iranian leadership on administering a tax on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz in a new peace deal for the region.
Trump said both the US and Iran could jointly tax ships passing through the stretch of water, which is critical for around a fifth of global crude oil supplies, with negotiations developing at a fast pace following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire.
He told ABC News that it would be a “beautiful thing” for the two countries to cooperate in shipping operations in the region.
“We’re thinking of doing it as a joint venture. It’s a way of securing it, also securing it from lots of other people,” Trump said.
Questions from the US broadcaster about a possible tax followed a report in Reuters last month that Iran was considering a tax worth a fee of $2m for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Straits are a Universal Passage. free to everyone. I can’t believe trump would ever enter into a business relationship with these scumbags. I hope this is either false or some kind of joke.
I think we learned a lot of lessons from this conflict.
We didn’t know they would be so animalistic to put kids on bridges.
That move right there was so shocking, so jaw dropping that out really did put an end to the day.
Hold these guys off. Come back when we can deal with this
More than 80% of the oil that goes thru Hormuz is headed for China, Japan, India, or South Korea. 0% goes to the US. So I see nothing but upside to those countries pay a shipping tax. We’ll even be nice and share it with Iran.
Just because Iran flouts international rights of free navigation on the open seas does not mean the U.S. should join them. Look at the precedent this sets for China in the South China Sea to see what the ramifications might be.
I support President Trump in almost all of his actions. This will not prevent my voting for those who support him and his policies, but this is the wrong approach.
It was fun, but I’m done with this alternate reality of craztown.
I am now ready to return a saner reality. This one sucks.
So Iran wants western states to pay tribute, to use the Homusz strait.
If memory serves the USA fought the Barbary pirates over same issue in past
You really are clueless about his way of negotiating.
“There are reports that Iran is charging fees to tankers going through the Hormuz Strait — They better not be and, if they are, they better stop now!” President DONALD J. TRUMP

When I saw that report I knew the US was checkmated. And sure enough, the ceasefire was announced a few hours later. I haven't seen any journalist make the connection, but IMO that was a key moment.
"Trump wrote: “The United States will work closely with Iran, which we have determined has gone through what will be a very productive Regime Change!"
So now we've achieved "regime change" by redefining it to mean the IRGC/mullahs choosing a new leader after we assassinated the old ones. This is as crazy as Roosevelt and Churchill ending the war against Nazi Germany after an assassination of Hitler in 1942, leaving Nazis in charge of Europe, on the grounds that "regime change" has been achieved.
But go ahead, keep telling yourself the rest of us just don't understand. Personally, my "trust Trump" fuel tank ran empty a month ago as he spouted nonsense continually, and I can't refill it. Only he can do that.
How many times has he said that now??? It’s just empty bluster at this point. Let him prove me wrong.
The US does import around 500,000 - 750,000 barrels/day from the Persian gulf in recent years, around 8% of our total imports (not counting domestic production). Not a huge amount, but not nothing either. In any case it's a global market, and if oil was $100 in the US and $200 elsewhere, you can be that people would find ways to ship it out of the US at a profit (thus leading to shortages domestically) until the prices came into equilibrium again.
You are shocked that Muslims do what they have done in other areas under their control.
We all knew they would pull this shit, it’s the mussie way.
Only way forward, since we shot our load already, and need actual victory, is regime change and elimination of all Muslim s in the leadership.
Just what we need. A shipping tax for oil. That should drive down the cost of a tank of gas.
SARC/!
ROLCON!
I agree with you.
The idea that America does a joint venture with the assassins of Iran who just killed 45.000 people on 5 day rampage is so beyond insane, mad and utterly anti-Christian that it’s simply will never happen. Trust me on this.
I believe the only reasonable explanation for Trump’s comment is… trolling.
Maybe it’s just a way for him to pretend he’s totally crazy - which might be helpful against the Mollahs during future negotiations? It’s the only explanation.
That would prevent oil prices from dropping.
Midterms disaster here we come .
Alternatively, Trump really has descended into Biden territory mentally, and diehard Trump supporters are so invested in defending and explaining his comments away that they are unable to acknowledge it. That’s a troubling hypothesis.
