FDR Attorney General Homer Cummings Pushed National Handgun Registration for Years

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s 1933 pick for Attorney General was Senator Thomas J. Walsh, born in 1859 in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Two Rivers had a population of 1,337 in 1860. A self-made man, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin.  He grew up in the West.  Walsh won the election to the US Senate from Montana in 1912. He exposed the Teapot Dome scandal in 1922. His summer home was in what became Glacier National Park. On the way to his inauguration in 1933, he died of an apparent heart attack on a passenger train, as he traveled to D.C. from Florida, at the age of 73.

Homer Stillé Cummings was meant as a stopgap replacement.

Homer Stillé Cummings was a reliable political hack whom Roosevelt originally appointed as Governor General of the Philippines. After Walsh’s untimely death, Roosevelt selected Cummings as Attorney General.

Cummings was an early child of the American Urban class, born in Chicago in 1870. He grew up and prospered in the American Northeast. In 1933, he was a member of the Democratic National Committee and had previously served as its chairman. He left the office of Attorney General in 1939 and entered private law practice in Washington, D.C.

Homer Cummings became Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Attorney General in 1933. He became the crusader who pushed hard for de facto national firearms bans and especially for handgun registration in the United States.

Cummings succeeded in passing the National Firearms Act but failed to obtain national handgun registration. In 1937, he stated his belief that all firearms must be registered.“I am convinced of this—any practical measure for the control of firearms must at least contain provisions for the registration of all firearms.”

If FDR's first pick for Attorney General had lived a few years, everything in the History of U.S. gun control would have been different.

“If FDR’s first pick for Attorney General had lived a few years, everything in the History of U.S. gun control would have been different. “

Likely the history of the world would have been different as, back then, an armed populace could ‘do things’ if government got out of hand.

Today, not so much, as our ‘friends’ in DC can use their keyboards to effectively CRIPPLE US (or at least 99.9% of us). But still, our guns are why criminals usually break into homes during the day (when the guy and the college-educated woman are working), rather than as it is now in the UK, where if you leave your front door unlocked, you get ‘visitors’ in the evening demanding to know where the goodies are.

The Supreme Court is supposed to be the bulwark agaist this sort of political figure. “Shall not be infringed”. The Supreme Court should have spent the last century or so striking down every single attempt at gun control. Instead, we have about a million infringements, and the Supreme Court thinks it’s fine. That’s the problem.

If nothing else, the inability of an unarmed population to rise up against a totalitarian, murderous regime in Iran shows the need for the 2nd Amendment.

The Supreme Court has been dominated by Progressive ideology since the 1940’s. It is only recently there is a majority of Originalists and Textualists on the Supreme Court.

It is taking time, but this court has already done major work to reverse the decades of Progressive errosion of the Constitution.

You cannot “save the Republic” by destroying the Republic.

The National Firearms Act of 1934 originally intended to require a $200 tax on all handguns. That’s why there is a tax (now $0) on short barreled rifles and shotguns - to close a potential loophole against the handgun tax. But handguns were removed at the last minute, but SBRs and SBDs remained.

The NRA and lots of citizens lobbied hard to have handguns removed from the NFA. It worked. But FDR was popular, so the Congress awarded the FDR the consolation prize of leaving SBRs, SBSs, silencers, and machine guns in the NFA.

In 1941, just days before the Pearl Harbor attack, Congress reaffirmed Second Amendment rights and prohibited gun registration. In 1968, bills to register guns were debated, with opponents recalling the Nazi experience and supporters denying that the Nazis ever used registration records to confiscate guns. The bills were defeated, as every such proposal has been ever since, including recent “universal background check” bills.

The lies we have been told over the years...

1962 Thomas J. Dodd and Emanuel Celler called for HANDGUN registration. We ONLY want to register handguns. Rifles will not be affected!
1964, We ONLY want to register ALL firearms, not ban them.

1968 We ONLY want to register all guns, and ban the import of foreign Saturday Night Specials, and 5-shot bolt action army surplus rifles! (they got the ban).

1970, We ONLY want to ban small American handguns. Rifles will not be affected!

1976 We ONLY want to ban ALL handguns! Rifles will not be affected!

1981, Actress Lee Grant on Good Morning America (ABC) screams...”THE NRA IS A RIFLE ORGANIZATION! THEY SHOULD GIVE UP THEIR HANDGUNS AND THEY CAN KEEP THEIR RIFLES!”

1984, they came for the rifles.

1994..When they thought they had banned “As-s-s-ault rifles they did not shut off the lights and go home. they immediately went after their next target, .50 cal single shot rifles “THAT CAN TAKE DOWN AN AIRPLANE!”

They will never be satisfied till they have an unarmed population.

“..They will never be satisfied till they have an unarmed population...”

The Communist Party USA! absoutely has to have an unarmed populace to do what they want to do to America....and us.
At some point, there will be a major pushback..somehow, some way.
Unfortunately, violence seems to be the only language these godless commie cretins, along with their muzzie jack-off buddies, seem to understand.

“The National Firearms Act of 1934 originally intended to require a $200 tax on all handguns.”

Yes, the intent was to effectively ban handguns by putting a ridiculously high tax on them (nearly $5,000 in today’s money). But it’s interesting that even as ‘recently’ as 1934, Congress didn’t have the power to ban anything by simply passing a law against it.

"If nothing else, the inability of an unarmed population to rise up against a totalitarian, murderous regime in Iran shows the need for the 2nd Amendment."

Or perhaps a murderous group or even militant gangs of thugs rising up in order to pillage and do brigandage across our nation..

Law and order is not the normal way of life to some in our nation today.

Eleanor Roosevelt always carried a loaded pistol in her purse. She was trained by the National Guard.

Who doesn't remember a mass shooting event where the background of the shooter didn’t include information he was being treated for OCD, depression or PTSD?

Except for this one?

Anybody remember seeing a blame the guns campaign connected to an 'Institute of Government' before?

Of course, it isn't an official government website chipping away at US but them people know how to get things done, you gotta give them that.

Eleanor Roosevelt always carried a loaded pistol in her purse.

Her only authorization to do so was the Second Amendment... and her husband being the President.

She was above the law. Most states required carry permits at the time.

An organization called Jews for the preservation of the second amendment put out a book you can get on the Internet called the Nazi origins of US gun law. Senator Dodd‘s dad was one of the prosecutors at Nuremberg. He cut and pasted literally Hitler’s gun law that he was exposed to at Nuremberg and it became the gun control act of 1968. The entire sporting purpose clause and description came straight from Nazi Germany.

So how long did it take for him to figure out gun registration doesn’t stop any homicides?
