Secretary of State Marco Rubio skipped the interpreter and took matters into his own hands Saturday, switching to fluent Spanish to deliver President Donald Trump’s agenda directly to a dozen Latin American leaders at the Shield of the Americas Summit.
“We don’t need an interpreter for this one,” Rubio told Trump before addressing the room in Spanish, as shown in the video shared by The White House. The moment went viral across social media. Trump looked on with approval as his top diplomat assumed translation duties.
The exchange set the tone at Trump National Doral in Miami. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth followed Rubio to the podium and told the president, “I only speak American,” PJ Media reported from the scene. Rubio responded by joking that he speaks Cuban, according to a social media post cited by PJ Media.

Is the only video that hour long X video?
Go to timestamp 46:30 minutes to see Marco Rubio’s entire presentation and to 49 minutes to just hear the “no translator” portion.
X doesn’t give you video controls does it?
It probably helps the Latin American leaders feel more comfortable about our relations when Rubio can speak their language.
I studied Spanish for about 3 years at the night school level and my teacher’s family’s background was also Cuban. She spoke English with no accent, and she spoke fluent Spanish as well. I learned a lot, but since I don’t use it, I don’t remember too much of it.

Marco is running for President.
I still preferred Hegseth response in English, I’m sure the Latin group could understand.
Excellent...thanks for posting. Rubio has become much more than he was in the Senate - good pick for the administration...
He is really fluent in Spanish.
Even with the proper accent.
I have heard many US politicos attempting Spanish, always with terrible results and obvious English accent! See e.g. Dr Biden.
Rubio is the first one who passes the test!
I was able to click the time I wanted to see on the bar below which indicates minutes elapsed in playback. I often move the time on X videos back & forth if I miss a point or want to see something again.
Marco has stated that if Vance runs Marco will not run
Both are young so we can get 16 years.
Hopefully, Colombia will join in half a year, Pedro is on his way out.
Peru is in turmoil, but I think, it will join soon too.
Brazil hold an election soon to, will see how it will go.
Venezuela may join soon too.
The there are the commie states Cuba and Nicaragua.
Marco’s presence illustrates our turn to the Americas as Europe is fractured. It’s their history. We still have 2 oceans but only if we use them to our advantage regarding immigration.
Perhaps Rubio could be the best presidential candidate in 2030.
I will have to find out which extension interferes with X.
Above my pay grade 😌

Both in English and in Spanish, he spoke without a teleprompter or notes. A very capable man and a great asset to this Administration. I hope he will hold a top job in the next administration, possibly the top job. I admire him for not letting DT’s nasty barbs when they were running in 2015-16 destroy his confidence. He stood up and continued to demonstrate his worth without bitter tantrums, unlike just about everyone else who has lost a big race—Hillary, Romney, Kerry, Gore, to name a few.
While I was an undergraduate French major, the head of the Romance Language Department was Cuban. He often said that English was the language for commerce, French the language for diplomacy, but Spanish was the language for love.
