All truckers and bus drivers in the United States will have to take their commercial driver's license tests in English as the Trump administration expands its aggressive campaign to improve safety in the industry and get unqualified drivers off the road.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the latest effort Friday to ensure that drivers understand English well enough to read road signs and communicate with law enforcement officers. Florida has already started administering its tests in English.
Many states allow drivers to take their license tests in other languages even though they are required to demonstrate English proficiency. California offered tests in 20 other languages.
And Duffy said that a number of states have hired other companies to administer commercial driver's license tests, and those companies aren't enforcing the standards that drivers are supposed to meet.
"And the third party tester is participating in the scam because they are not adequately testing the people who went through a sham school," Duffy said.
He said every American wants drivers who get behind the wheel of a big rig to be qualified to handle the vehicles. But Duffy said that problems in the trucking industry were "allowed to rot and no one's paying attention to it for decades." *** Earlier this week, the Department of Transportation said 557 driving schools should close because they failed to meet basic safety standards. And the department has been aggressively going after states that issued commercial driver's licenses to immigrants who shouldn't have qualified for them since a fatal crash in August.
*** In December, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration took action to decertify up to 7,500 of the 16,000 schools nationwide, but that included many defunct operations.

To this day, it confounds me how anyone could obtain a driver’s license, commercial or otherwise, without being proficient in English.
I’m glad Secretary Duffy is taking on this issue. I suspect that some ___ judge will issue an injunction against this, citing racism. These district court judges need to be reigned in once and for all by the Supreme Court.
How horrible.
All Federal forms should be in English especially the gimme dat forms.
What about hazardous cargo and associated placards?
Might some trucking firms have some splaining to do?
Waiting for the ‘racist’ statement.
As a retired truck drive it surprises me how ILLEGALS got license. The hoops I had to jump through to get certified on top of getting a CDL. Just about all my loads were HazMat. I had to go through the FBI and Homeland Security (Coast Guard) to be able to haul and pickup/deliver my loads. Finger Printing and Backgound checks weren’t cheap. 100.00 per instance. The whole ides of a CDL was to check that you didn’t have a license from more than one state and you were who you said you were. The Department of Transportation really dropped the ball on this one(Buttigieg) after I retired.
This is new?!?!?!
This is the US.
Learn English if you want to live and work here.
I’m sick of all the bilingual stuff forced on us.
Or do they get to have “assistance” such as various places that say you can have another person help you with a language problem in filling something out.
I think the Blue Cross attachment flyers have multi lingual offers to extend that help.
If so, the truckers could have the helper coach them and then turn in the forms.
On the freeway “Vehicles In Right Lane Cannot Re-Enter” means the foreign born trucker will think “So? I don’t need a rest stop anyway.”
My cousin was a long distance CDL driver. He had to jump through lots of hoops, too. Left his wife and kids for days at a time, but it was his way of providing for his family.
He passed away several years ago, while on one of those trips. He pulled over to a truck stop, and made it to the restroom, where he had a heart attack. It was very sad. He was on the return home, but still a few states away. At least, when he knew he wasn’t feeling well, he pulled over, and didn’t hurt anyone else.
These others who have cheated the system are a danger to others. Driving is a privilege, not a right. I think you’re right about placing the blame on Buttigieg. The guy had no business being named to that post.
Unlike many other countries, e.g. Europe, which extensively use pictograms, US road signs use lots of English.
How can anybody be on road, if he does not understand what “Speed limit” means?!
Closing the barn door after the livestock has left the farm.
After all these years of issuing commercial driver’s license tests now they decide to make them know English.
The coffee urn and donuts machine must have broke down at the DMV’s.
But, but, but…Mayor Pete! Greatest Transportation Secretary ever.
People spend fortunes to get here, but can’t spend three weeks learning elementary English?
The elite want to import people here but want them illiterate, dependant, and under control.
“Commercial Drivers Learing Center”
The elite want to import people here but want them illiterate, dependant, and under control.
Same reason are education system sucks. They want people just smart enough to run the machines.
Hope this is the end of foreign truckers operating in the country. Video link below is from Bonehead Truckers, a youtube channel that has been working recently to bring the issues foreign truckers create to light. He has many videos he posts that were sent to him from truckers around the country who video the bad driving habits, and other disgusting behaviors foreign drivers bring with them from their third world $hithole countries.

“All truckers and bus drivers in the United States will have to take their commercial driver’s license tests in English...”
Won’t hold water. Most states do not require regular drivers to be fluent or even take the test in English. Some states provide an alternate test and others allow translators into the testing area to assist the candidate. If the majority of drivers on the road are not required, it’s a simple test in court to toss this.
The only way to make this float is if English is established as the language for the country and all drivers are required to use it for all purposes like business and government interaction. And that has been on the government plate for many decades and neither side of the aisle has made it real.

In the past, a few of my girlfriends caught truck drivers learing(sic) at them.
