Davos 2026: the last-chance saloon to save the old world order?

"A Spirit of Dialogue”: the theme for this year’s World Economic Forum, the gathering of the global elite in the sparkling Alpine air of Davos, seems a heroic stretch, when star guest Donald Trump has spent the past year smashing up the world order.

The president will touch down alongside the snowcapped Swiss mountains with the largest US delegation ever seen at the WEF, including the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, the treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, the commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, and the special envoy Steve Witkoff.

Last year, just days after his second inauguration, Trump was beamed in to Davos on screen to deliver a punchy speech, in which he threatened across-the-board tariffs, urged Nato countries to raise defence spending, and called on the Federal Reserve to slash interest rates “immediately” – setting the tone, as it turned out, for a chaotic 12 months.

A year on, what was left of the fraying rules-based global order, already jeopardised by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the rising power of the autocratic regime in Beijing, is rapidly unravelling, and the “spirit of dialogue” has been distinctly hard to find.

Trump has them so rattled that they sent 16 soldiers to Greenland from four NATO countries.

The Greenland deal will be made at DAVOS.

One hears different things about the number of NATO forces deployed in Greenland, but whatever the number is, obviously they would be at a military disadvantage. People chortle about this as if it reveals some weakness. It sounds like insane talk since NATO is supposedly an alliance of like-minded countries so why would there need to be a military confrontation in Greenland? The United States already has rights to deploy military forces in Greenland.

This is obviously about some fantasy global war between right-thinking conservatives and globalists. Fine, sign me up but at least have the decency to announce it as such, so people will know who is fighting whom for what reason.

This has nothing to do with China or Russia. It is really about the current ruling group in America wanting out of NATO and re-defining the world order as a free-for-all, where powerful countries can just take whatever they want from weak countries. The excuse is made that if we don’t do it, “they” will do it. Perhaps over a long period of time they would do it, too, but I think this is exaggerated. It is time for the Trump people to come clean, they want to expand the political and economic sphere of the United States and they don’t believe anyone can stop them. Those who sign on for this will be equally responsible in moral terms for whatever the outcome is, and the outcome will probably not be anything like what you imagine, a golden age of prosperity with rich Americans bossing everybody around like slaves. We tried that in the 19th century remember?
