Steve Bannon reveals why Canada is the 'next Ukraine' as he details Trump's real motivations behind taking Greenland and his 'Donroe Doctrine'

President Donald Trump is preparing to counter Chinese influence in Canada as his 'Donroe Doctrine' for the Western Hemisphere expands beyond Latin America,  his former campaign architect Steve Bannon has told the Daily Mail.

'The next big thing is going to be Canada. Canada is the next Ukraine because they can't defend their northern arctic border and China is going to come take a bite,' former White House chief strategist Bannon said. 'They can't defend it and Trump is going to come in hard on Canada.'

During his first term, Trump formed an Arctic working group that deepened his understanding of Greenland's geo-strategic importance—and highlighted concerns about Canada's Arctic vulnerabilities.

The president has long been concerned about China's actions in the Arctic after they described themselves as a 'near-arctic state' in 2018, former White House officials told the Daily Mail.

Canada is also forging closer ties with China, which threatens to upset the existing relationship with the United States.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sparked concern from Americans as he visited China for the first time in nearly a decade and described Chinese president Xi Jinping and China as 'strategic partners.'

'I believe the progress we have made and the partnership sets us up well for the new world order,' Carney said.

Carney also sided with the Danish and NATO allies over President Trump's interest in abstaining Greenland, asserting to reporters that President Xi 'found much alignment of views' in respect to American interests on the island.

Carney's comments certainly raised concerns in the Trump administration as the president remains famously suspicious of foreign activity in the Western hemisphere.

The president signaled newly resurfaced desire to acquire Greenland has more to do with keeping Russia and China out of the strategically important region.

Canada has been a Chinese colony for awhile and now it’s full of Indians too. Better off to just nuke the entire place at this point

I think he’s saying that an American invasion of Canada would be more successful than Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

That's not going to go over well with Canadian conservatives.

How does offending all Canadians, conservatives included, advance American goals?

This entire conversation would be drastically different had the Rooskie Tzar sold Alaska to the English, which would have made more sense geographically. After the Crimean War, though, the Russians wanted the US to be a barrier between Russia and the English colony Canada.

Canadians don’t matter at all. The idea is to take the north for our own purposes and leave the populated parts for the Canadians. Ideally we could deport our liberals to join them.
There could be a trans-Arctic “independent” Inuit country.

Canada is an attractive target for foreign powers. It has a huge land mass loaded with resources, a small population, and can't defend itself.

Basically, it will come down to if one group or country can dominate the others or if there's a geographical power sharing agreement between the Chinese, Indians, Arabs, and Americans.

Russia fought Britain in the Crimean War. So that wasn’t a possibility.

I spent five minutes thinking about what to say about this, basically I consider it to be 5% dangerous talk and 95% crazy talk. I don’t know who in American politics today will support a military invasion of Canada based on some pundit’s unsupported assertions about Chinese dominance of Canada. And the idea that Canada cannot defend its northern territory against China or Russia is untested and just (again) the theory of a pundit with no actual knowledge of the situation. I would bet Steve Bannon knows next to nothing about Canada, the Canadian arctic, or Canadian military capability.

Also, we have NATO and NORAD treaties requiring NATO partners and the U.S. to assist Canada in defending its territory. Is Bannon saying those treaties mean nothing and can be ignored while assembling an invasion force to occupy Canada?

Anyway, I would take this seriously if Trump said it, if it’s just Bannon then maybe it’s just a cry for attention from a kid outside the candy store.

Presidents sometimes have underlings float ideas into the public.

Maybe to test the reaction, or to shift the conversation, or to prepare the public's mind for a more official announcement.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney Is an Obama FAN.
He has expressed that the relationship between Canada and the United States has changed significantly since Barack Obama’s presidency, stating that the U.S. is “no longer a reliable partner.”
Go figure…….I bet they have frequent “talks.”

“America apparently needs to invade MSP.”

Ya. Well MSP is not a country. It is a part of the US that acts like a country.

“he Minneapolis–Saint Paul–Bloomington, MN–WI Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), commonly known as the Twin Cities, had a population of 3,690,261 according to the 2020 U.S. Census. As of the most recent U.S. Census Bureau estimates (2023), the population is approximately 3.69 million, reflecting a slight annual growth rate of about 0.4%.”

OK, it has a slightly smaller pop. than Denmark.
