Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney raised eyebrows when he made a comment about a “new world order” in a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Thursday.
“The world has changed much since that last visit. I believe the progress that we have made in the partnership sets us up well for the new world order,” said Carney.
His comment was met with questions from lawmakers and commentators, as the phrase “new world order” is often one used by conspiracy theorists.
Carney is in China to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The visit comes as traditional trade agreements and alliances have been upended by President Donald Trump’s tariffs and foreign policy.
While in Beijing, Carney discussed deals on energy and trade with China, including rolling back tariffs on some Chinese imports.
When asked to clarify the “new world order” remark, Carney stated that the multilateral system that had been developing had been undercut.
As a consequence, Carney suggested that like-minded countries would begin to develop coalitions around various issues instead of relying on multilateral organizations like the World Trade Organization.
He stated that the new world order is still developing as a result of these changes.
