Political strategists say Democrats running in competitive races in this year’s midterm elections for the House and Senate should steer clear of making President Trump the centerpiece of their campaigns.
While Trump’s approval ratings are low and Americans have been frustrated by his job performance in the first year of his second term, the strategists say the key to winning is to home in on economic issues — particularly affordability.
“The fight to win 2026 will be on the economy and affordability. It’s not going to be on the Epstein files,” said Susan Del Percio, a veteran Republican strategist who has never supported the president. “They shouldn’t take the bait on Trump. Even if they want to talk about Venezuela, you can’t talk about it too much.”
It’s not as though Trump won’t be mentioned, people familiar with the strategy of the House Democrats’ campaign arm say. It’s that the president will be secondary to the primary focus of how Democrats can make the economy better.
“You can’t ignore Trump because it’s his economy. But the top message is the economy and affordability,” one source familiar with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s (DCCC) plans for the midterms said.
Democrats have been feeling increasingly optimistic about their chances of taking back the House. They point to gubernatorial wins in Virginia and New Jersey and smaller races — including their win in Miami’s mayoral contest, the first time a Democrat won that city in nearly 30 years.

Healthcare and general state of personal economics will be big for swing voters, independents...
Unfortunately I am not sure that Republicans are doing enough to defend the status quo...the RNC is MIA as per usual (since Lara Trump left.)
Why not? That’s all they ever do on everything.
Yeah I doubt they can resist not doing so.
And for GOP it needs to be less about defending status quo under Trump and more about what remains left to be done and all the fighting that remains against the damage Trump inherited...
But I admit the transgender and social stuff will have less sway this time around. Especially if money situations don’t improve for people.
RFK Jr’s “MAHA” wins are substantial though. Like decreasing amount of required infant vaccines. Encouraging more health sovereignty and healthier food. That needs to be touted! Big Pharma is always golden as an enemy.
What the GOP cannot do is look like it’s in the pockets of Insurance companies.
The can try all they want, their base will never allow it.
They won’t do this. They can’t help themselves.
How about running on the billions of dollars they handed over to Illegals for a kickback , LOL
The GOP has to be dragged kicking and screaming to reelection, even then they really don’t do much. When they’re in the minority they love campaigning and making promises.
Well… what are they going to use?
Not bad advice, except:
1) If not for “Trump is literally HITLER and we’re not him” they got nuthin’!
2) THEY. CAN’T. HELP. THEMSELVES. They just can’t!
It won’t matter.
Isn’t that like asking fish not to swim?
“ It won’t matter”
What do you mean?
I mean, they are imploding as a relevant political force in this nation. Their party is completely out of touch with the majority of Americans.
“ I mean, they are imploding as a relevant political force in this nation. Their party is completely out of touch with the majority of Americans.”
Ya. That was what I meant as well
The GOP will try, huffing and puffing, the drag them to the competition but they are also, many, in trouble for fraud, insider trading, and the ones who aren’t will have to work for once. They’ll have to pretend to like Trump. They’ll have to get a copy of the constitution and have their staff read it, if not— argue- read it themselves
But Dems will be over.
Good luck with that! They can’t help themselves.
But that’s all they have.
