Kids on the autism spectrum are facing challenges as Minnesota implements measures to prevent fraud in social service programs.
State's new preapproval process
What we know: The state is now conducting preapproval reviews on Medicaid claims in 14 high-risk areas, including autism centers. This means businesses like Holland Autism Centers have had their claims held, with no payments expected for up to 90 days.
Jennifer Larson, founder of Holland Autism Centers, expressed concern over the financial strain this delay is causing. "They can hold funds according to the federal government up to 90 days. Well, 90 days is a whole quarter. And every two weeks I have a $250,000 payroll. So how am I supposed to make that happen?" said Larson.
Larson says Gov. Walz is throwing the baby out with the bath water, punishing legitimate autism centers to make sure fraudsters don’t get any more money.
Impact on families and centers
Dig deeper: She says most autism centers can’t stay open without the state funding coming sooner than 90 days.
So as many as 50,000 children will lose the help they need.
What they're saying: Parents like Jason Fleisner are worried about losing all the progress they made and the hope that gave them.
"You take away facilities like this, and it extinguishes that hope, because then we're back to not knowing what are we going to do, what is tomorrow going to look like," said Fleisner.

The state can pay for them, as in Minnesota.
I don’t relaly understand the need for “Autism Centers,” but they know who to blame for this.
WTH is an ‘autism center’? A place for anti-social kids to be anti-social along with other anti-social kids?
The state needs to jump in and provide the money as it is their fault for being incompetent retards. They can forward a claim for monies fronted which will be repaid upon verification and approval. All state agencies receiving money from the Federal government should have a Special Master appointed to review and approve all payments made to the state.
Apparently EVERYONE in Minnesota is Autistic according to these child care centers and they all need moolah
Here come the sob stories.
I can’t hate Democrats enough.
Ive never heard of an “Autism center” my cousin is non verbal has lived in a home almost his entire 46 yrs of life..he’s never once been to an “Autism center” the state pays for funding for him to be in a home where they take care of him
In 2025, everyone is autistic.
Truly autistic children have no ‘social’ skills... If you can socialize... You are not truly autistic... You’re in that ‘spectrum’ that includes thousands of children who are merely socially odd, which includes pretty much every child.
Children act like children... That’s has always been what children do. They can’t be adults... Because they aren’t.
Autism seems to me to be one of the most vague maladies out there. Some of the symptoms or indicators cover almost everyone.
For $1500 a month I’m autistic
> Payment delays threaten autism centers <
No. The widespread fraud is threatening the legitimate centers.
yep burying your face in phone stuff and being oblivious to the world around you would qualify
Here come all the Guilt Merchants, with their GoFundMe tin cups raised up high.
Thank the Sammies.
How much learing happens at these centers?
An autism center is a place for parents with autistic kids to get a break from them.
The culprit here is the fraud that makes even legitimate facilities look suspicious
Poor, poor Joey. So sad.
