New Zealand to Reform Draconian Firearms Law

The New Zealand government is working to reform its complex and draconian firearms law.

In 2019, a far-left ideologue mass murdered dozens of Muslims in New Zealand. One of his goals was to promote draconian gun laws in New Zealand and in the United States. He succeeded in New Zealand. Many extreme restrictions on firearms and ownership were piled onto already restrictive laws.

Far Left PM Jacinda Ardern was successful in pushing through the draconian law on a wave of media maximized emotion. As part of the pushback to these draconian exercises of power, the Hon. Nicole McKee was elected as a member of parliament for the ACT party in the election of 2020.

Associate Minister of Justice, Hon. Nicole McKee, was interviewed in 2024 by deerstalkers.org.nz:Labour’s firearm law changes in 2019 affected everybody, not just hunters. Although, in saying that, hunters are a massive part of the licenced-firearms-owning community. I recall when the kids were small, and hubby was studying, the only way we got meat on our table at home was when I went out and hunted for it. We could not afford supermarket meat.

The real motivation came in 2019. I was running my own business, running firearms licencing courses in rural and isolated communities. I realised when the 2019 changes came into effect that they would affect everybody, not just the hunters, as I mentioned, but also target shooters, collectors, pest controllers and so on.

In the New Zealand election of 14 October 2023, the three conservative parties won 67 seats, while the far left parties dropped 21 seats to a total of 55. This was a tremendous repudiation of the far left in New Zealand. Gun owners are only 5% of the population of New Zealand.

Interestingly the mosque gunman cited Candace Owens as his “greatest influence” way back then.

I need to find my copy of The Samurai, the Mountie and the Cowboy: Should America Adopt the Gun Controls of Other Democracies? I don’t remember the cultural and historical backdrops of AU and NZ which gave rise to the current situations.

It’s an important factor, because They look at Us and visa versa and sometimes scratch our heads in amazement. It’s not that difficult: As one reviewer wrote, “Then there is the American practice of government-sponsored oppression of large segments of the population—workers in labor unions, the Native American, black Americans, immigrants of all colors, religious groups, political radicals—and this has led to a decisive lack of subordination to “the proper authorities.” Or, as Kopel puts it: “Gun control in the United States cannot play a similar role in reinforcing social controls, because Americans do not share the values of subordination which most citizens in other democracies do.” (Page 418)”

Didn’t take long for Albenese in Australia to call for more “hate speech” laws and stricter gun control:

“At the federal level, the government has launched a gun buyback scheme and is reviewing national intelligence and police agencies to ensure they have adequate powers to prevent future attacks.”

If they can’t get guns, they’ll use knives and trucks.

I have a copy in my personal library. As I recall, New Zealand followed the ideas expressed in British police officer Colin Greenwood’s book Firearms Control (also in my personal library). In 1983, that country abolished the decades old registry for sporting rifles and shotguns and created a simplified licensing system (I remember this quite well as me and my family lived in New Zealand at the time). It satisfied both frontline police officers and farmers and sport shooters fed up with the backlog created by the old registry.

There is a chapter devoted to Australia (titled “Nobody’s Happy”). It discusses the more urbanized culture in that country versus the more rural based New Zealand one. There has always been a good sporting and hunting based culture of firearms ownership there, but looked down upon by the urban and left leaning mindset, particularly New South Wales. The shooters thought some of the restrictions too onerous and the urban people referred to such persons as “Rambos and Rednecks” and demanded more restrictions (Port Arthur being their ultimate excuse). In the mid to late 1980s, police union organizations in the states Victoria and South Australia recommended following New Zealand’s example of abolishing registries for sporting rifles and shotguns as a way of cutting back on backlog and having front line police focus on real crime fighting work and keeping good relationships with law abiding firearms owners.

The Christchurch shooter did want draconian gun laws in the US as his goal, but not because he agreed with gun control. He was an accelerationist, as in he wanted civil war and for people to fight before everyone got too fat and complacent. And the only place where people might fight was the US over the issue of gun control. Completely wacky but to my understanding he wasn’t a far-left ideologue, but maybe I’m wrong.

I've been here on FR for almost 28 years. In that 28 years I've asked myself over and over again, "what's it going to take for Civil War to break out in the USA?"

We've been going down the slippery path towards one for many years. I've often thought it was going to be a shooting Civil War.

I no longer think that.

There is a Civil War happening here in the USA, it is however being done quite peacefully by people voting with their feet, leaving high taxation, high regulation, anti-business, anti-freedom states for more tax friendly & freedom oriented states.

Case in point: Illinois. Over 400,000 people (including me) have left the arguably highest taxed, most corrupt, most incompetently run, and violent states (thanks to Chicago) in the country for states like Arizona (#1 destination), Florida (#2 destination) or Tennessee (#3 destination, where I am now.)

When the "Civil War" which here in the USA is the free movement of people from one state to another is done, there will be a significant rebalancing of power in the US House of Representatives as blue states like NY, CA, IL for example, lose representatives in the US House and states like Florida, Tennessee, Arizona and Texas for example, gain them because of the population shift.

I believe this is exactly what our Founding Fathers intended: voting with our feet and our tax dollars leaving corrupt & incompetently led states for more tax-friendly states.

Personally, it cost me over $30,000 in ILLINOIS TAXES just to exist in that state. Not any more.

Who's going to "make up" the tax revenue the state loses when mass amounts of people like me have fled the state?

JB Pritzker has answered that question 54 times by raising taxes on EVERYONE. With a state budget that bloated from $35B to $55B in six years under his "leadership" the entire state is going to find out very soon that they cannot tax their way into prosperity. It's not just people like me leaving, entire BUSINESSES and their HQ's are leaving IL taking THEIR TAX DOLLARS with them also. Illinois is in for a world of hurt VERY SOON. As it should be.

And this my friends, is how a Civil War in the USA is being conducted RIGHT NOW. Peaceably, free movement of people.

Leftists cry about slavery, yet they are OK with slavery to the state.

The sheer brilliance of that clear, concise statement of fact is completely lost on the Democrats.

When I see posts like yours, I just wish I could be as clear, concise and succinct. I'm part Irish which means I'm unfortunately, long-winded in my responses. (sigh...)

Keep in mind that the ChristShurch shooter was stopped by a good guy with a gun. When he showed up at another church some guy in the parking lot pulled out a rifle and started popping off in his direction.
The murderer ran off.

Just curious but on 9-11, when the USA had the biggest mass murder of 3000 people killed by moslems armed with $3 box cutters and hijacked aircraft, did anyone immediately call for a ban on Boxcutters and a confiscation of privately owned aircraft?

Didn’t think so. Had the hijackers used even ONE FIREARM their would be no let up in demands for gun control.

My sympathy for Illinois. Virginia just got taken over by the dems, so the gun control is coming for us as well.

I’m not convinced that fat, comfortable and well entertained people will ever have any sort of civil unrest as long as they can remain fat, comfortable and well entertained.

Sorry about Virginia. They're going to follow the Illinois "model" which was just implemented via EO from Tim "no balz" Walz in Minnesomalia, and in Colorado by their Democrat governor too.

The Dem governors are trying to overwhelm the courts with hand-picked judges to deny American Citizens their Constitutional rights, while giving everything away to the illegals. Makes me sick.

No one knows if the Bondi beach terror attack will have an effect on this proposed New Zealand reform.

,,, Nicole's reforms are being ushered in well after the Christchurch mosque shootings of 2019, when there were a lot more people killed here by the Australian shooter. The laws brought in by Ardern after the 2019 tragedy were a typical Labour Party kneejerk reaction. What happened in Sydney recently won't have much effect on the balancing Nicole's changes will redress.
