In a CNN This Morning segment today on the trend of northern students choosing Southern colleges, Boston Globe reporter Beth Teitell was reluctant to admit that one reason they do so is to escape the leftist politics of Northern schools.
To her credit, host Audie Cornish did raise the issue.
On her first try, Audie asked:
"Can I talk about the liberal arts part of it? Because I understand politics is coming into play. What are these students saying about why they're making this decision?"
Teitell ducked it, claiming that students chose the South because during COVID, students there were able to live relatively normal lives, compared to the stricter shutdowns in the North. But that hasn't made sense for multiple application cycles, since the COVID shutdowns ended more than 2.5 years ago.
Audie tried again: "Is it also just trying to get away from the culture of liberal arts colleges?"
Teitell finally admitted that "it definitely can be," but proceeded to condescend to such students, saying that many want to get away from the protests up North and "they're just worrying about what kind of cute cowboy boots they're going to wear."

Ping to Liberal Media Criticism list.
You mean the south won?
I actually picked U of Chicago because I had hoped it would be conservative.
Southern schools might get picked to getting away from snow. Duke is nig exactly conservative. My commie high school classmate went there and came out just as commie.
Ya, because everyone in the South wears cowboy boots. Maybe Texas but not places like NC and SC. Stupid.
I’d bet that if we looked at the faculties at most southern schools, they’d also be overrun with liberals. Even so, the overall vibe is surely more conservative, thanks in large part to the students!
Duke is very liberal.
Interestingly, Beth Teitell, the reporter who was reluctant to admit that northern students choose southern schools to escape liberalism went to Duke!
And when I was getting my BS in computer science here in the south, one northerner said he chose the south because he figured it'd make him one of the smart students by comparison. LOL Only a few of us finished with a BS in CS, and he wasn't one of them.

The professors maybe liberal. Heck the faculty at UF when I was there was just as liberal as they are now. But for the most part, the student body was pretty conservative, or at the very least, apolitical.
Believe me, Rice University in Houston, is probably the most liberal campus in the country.
Unless a college is explicitly conservative, like Hillsdale, Liberty, etc., the faculties are overwhelmingly liberal.
But, thanks to the students and the local environment, southern schools do tend to be more conservative.
Ok. I thought boots were a Texas thing cuz I’ve never seen them in the general public in the states I’ve mentioned.
And they still bring their politics with them.
at UNC Chapel Hill [ North Carolina ] leftism reigns supreme
Perhaps tuition rates might have something to do with this. Many times out of state tuition in some states may be lower than instate tuition in the NE.
I am from the South and most of the big name colleges are not conservative at all.
I picked the furthest college I could go to and still get in state tuition just to get as far away from home as I could.
They are party wear now, especially for girls.
