VIDEO: My Portugal Trip: The Issue that Sharply DIVIDES Portuguese Society

VIDEO

It's the one issue that sharply divides Portuguese society. Much more divisive than political, religious, or class differences. In fact, you could say that his issue divides Portugal into two mutually exclusive and irreconcilable groups.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

As you can see, the people in Portugal are VERY friendly. Because of their close ties (oldest alliance in world history) to Great Britain, many people there speak English. And if they don't speak English most of them can speak or at least understand Spanish. Therefore I had little trouble communicating with them. Even reading Portuguese signs and other material wa fairly easy since it is so similar to Spanish (although pronounced differently). One thing interesting that I didn't think about until I met a Japanese tourist there was that the Portuguese word for "thank you" is "Obrigado" which sounds a lot like the Japanese word "Arigato" which means the same thing. Did the Portuguese pick that word up in Japan where they had a prescence in the 16th century or did the Japanese pick it up from the Portuguese during the same period?

You are not the first person to notice the (slight) similarity. But the two words are not related. “Obrigado” is a a past participle of the verb that through another chain leads to English “obliged.” “Arigato” or a form thereof is apparently found in some 8th century document, well before contact with the Portuguese.

Arigato comes from 有り難し which is first seen in 8th century old Japanese. Obrigado also predates the 1500s. It must have been quite stunning for Japanese and Portuguese to hear two very dissimilar languages have similar words.

For one of your journeys, make a trip to Finland some day and report back to us. I’ve never forgotten a particular video from years ago that showed how people in Finland treated strangers - and perhaps everyone.. Very cold weather and cold shoulder to EVERYONE.. This is a good example so I guess the video I remember wasn’t far off.

Where I grew up, there were a lot of Finnish people and never a problem - only thing that I recall when hearing the “oldsters” discuss them were the “steam baths” they built on their farms. Several of their kids were in school and as normal as any of us were - LOL!

Finns are a special case…. They’re not really Scandies like the Swedes / Danes / Norwegians nor are they Slavs. and Finnish is actually related to modern Turkish.

That makes since because sometime in the past all Finnish male DNA was obliterated by an invasion.

And I also believe that Finnish is part of the same language group that includes Hungarian.

“...Finnish is actually related to modern Turkish.”

And Hungarian. Finno-Urgic. And Finns and Estonian speak basically the same language - a few different words and pronunciations, kind of like a New Jerseyan vs. an Alabaman.

The best description of Finns I’ve ever heard was from a Swede. He said that when Finns talk to you they look at their shoes. If their abnormally outgoing, they look at your shoes.

When the Portuguese first encountered Hindus along the east coast of Africa, they thought they had found followers of Prester John, as when the Portuguese held up a Cross and said, “Cristo! Cristo!” the Hindus responded, “Krishna! Krishna”

The confusion didn’t last long...

So UNBELIEVABLE that if I told you, you wouldn't believe me which is why I let the Portuguese people in the video reveal it.

I watched long enough to hear them talking about beer.

Maybe its a beer/wine squabble.

Maybe someone will volunteer to watch it further.
