Age is truly just a number.
A 72-year-old man demonstrated remarkable bravery, presence of mind, and physical fitness in rescuing a father and his son from a rip current at Florida’s New Smyrna Beach on Tuesday, according to a local outlet.
While riding waves, David “Bean” Coffee, 72, became aware of calls for help and spotted the pair grappling with the powerful current.
In an act of bravery, Coffee made two separate trips on his surfboard to save them. Initially, he assisted the son, who had lost his surfboard due to a snapped leash, before circling back to rescue the father.
By the time emergency responders arrived, Coffee had successfully brought both individuals to safety. Thankfully, both swimmers were unharmed.
When the news in today’s world is often so negative, there is nothing better than hearing a positive story about someone who acts selflessly in the service of others.
Not only does Coffee have a fantastic nickname, but he is clearly a brave individual who is also in fantastic shape, considering his age.
Paddling on a surfboard isn’t easy, especially in rough surf, and to do it while saving a life means you must have incredible endurance and strength. That Coffee did it at the ripe old age of 72 is proof that age is just a number, and that even as you get old, you can still be a lean, mean machine.
He’s an inspiration for us all.
Coffeebunga!
Looks pretty good for 72.
That’s using the ol’ Bean.

“The entire planet knows that you cannot beat a rip current; that you cannot beat moving water and yet it seems everyone who gets caught in a rip current starts screaming and flailing.”
Those that survive being caught in a rip current KNOW that they must swim parallel to the coast to get OUT of the current (then you walk four miles back home ).
Sounds like he gets a halo award.
