Many of our readers will remember the funeral that the Democratic Party staged for Paul Wellstone after he died in a plane crash shortly before the 2002 election. Democrats from around the country attended, and the event quickly became a political rally. It was televised nationally, and most viewers were repelled by the crass partisanship on display. Wellstone’s campaign manager apologized, but the damage was done, and days after the funeral Norm Coleman was elected to the Senate over substitute candidate Walter Mondale.
Last night, the City of Minneapolis–the Democratic Party–held a “vigil” for the victims of Robin Westman’s attack on Annunciation School. There was an actual memorial service earlier at Annunciation that was attended by families and others associated with the church and the school. The City’s event, essentially a political rally, was held nearby at Lynnhurst Park.
The speakers were a parade of DFL notables. You can view the event here. While all the speakers expressed sympathy for Westman’s victims, the killer himself was never mentioned. Rather, it was a gun control rally. Every speaker sounded the same theme: we can stop gun violence, all we need is political will. More gun control is the answer, Republicans are the problem.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey:
While thoughts and prayers are great, they are not adequate. These children were literally praying at this moment. *** [D]on’t let anybody tell you that it’s not about guns, because it is. When you have more guns than people in America, you got a problem. … Why have we not taken the necessary action to stop our children from dying?
We need to have true gun reform right now. Not tomorrow, not the next day…. Let’s make the change now!
So, what “true gun reform” does Frey have in mind? He didn’t say. During the 2023 legislative session, Minnesota’s Democrats passed the “gun reform” they claimed was necessary to keep firearms out of the hands of the mentally ill–a “red flag” law. In this instance, it didn’t work.
Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, now a Senate candidate:
[K]now that the antidote in this moment to the evil that we saw this morning and that we saw yesterday and that we continue to see is a radical love that calls for justice. Is a radical love that says we need to love our babies and our children more than our guns.
It doesn’t occur to any of these Democrats that the idea that their political opponents love guns more than children is false and offensive.
Attorney General Keith Ellison:
My thoughts and what I am thinking about is a national ban on assault rifles. My prayer is a national ban on these assault rifles. And you should know that when we used to ban them assault rifles, we kept a lot more people alive than we do now.
I credit Ellison for at least saying what gun laws he wants to enact. He was the only speaker who did so. But what he said about the “assault rifle” ban that was in effect from 1994 to 2004 is false. The U.S. homicide rate was falling when the ban went into effect, and it continued to fall for several years, then rose during the last five years of the ban. The homicide rate when the ban expired was 5.8 per 100,000; it was 4.6 per 100,000 in 2024.
The Democrats’ fixation on “assault rifles”–a political term with no fixed meaning–is curious. Rifles are among the least popular of murder weapons, ranking far below knives, below fists, and only slightly above clubs and hammers.
Ellison used the occasion to plug his record as Attorney General:
My thoughts are about the lawsuit I filed against Glock.
He went on and on, all of it political:
I’m praying for a Supreme Court that will not green light guns on the streets of our nation. I’m praying for that.
“Green lighting guns” means upholding the Second Amendment.
I’m not going to be partisan tonight, but I am going to be political because the fact that these guns proliferate on our streets and that no nation in the world that’s not in an active war has as much gun deaths as the United States, … We are number one when it comes to gun deaths. … And do you know what the leading cause of death for our babies is? It is guns.
That is true, if by “babies” he means 16 and 17 year old gang members. There was much more, including an unhinged attack on gun manufacturers and retailers, but I will spare you the rest.
Senator Amy Klobuchar:
I have long been an advocate for changing our laws.
She remained mute about what changes she has in mind.
Representative Angie Craig, also a contender for the Senate:
The weapons of war that are on our streets, we can do something about it. So I ask every single one of you here tonight … that it is up to us as a community to demand more from our lawmakers, to fight to make sure that these weapons of war are off our streets.
And how, exactly, are lawmakers to do that? Again, a discreet silence.
Finally, Representative Ilhan Omar:
You can change whatever laws you want in Minneapolis. You can change whatever laws you want in Minnesota. But if we do not change the laws of these United States of America, none of our kids are going to be safe. … The people who have access to guns around this country are our neighbors. They don’t get to have a passport to come in here. They can just drive. So this fallacy that we make ourselves believe that because we live in this great Minnesota that we are protected is a fallacy, because it is going to take national protection for all of our kids in these United States to be protected. And I am committed towards everyone you heard from in pushing for that on a national level.
Pushing for what? Again, crickets. And Omar’s focus on people driving across our border seems misplaced. Robin Westman was a native Minnesotan, as was the last famous local killer, Vance Boelter.
What these politicians really want is repeal of the Second Amendment and a ban on private ownership of firearms. But they can’t say that, and in any event they know it isn’t going to happen. So gun control–even more gun control!–remains what it has been for a long time: a way to fire up Democratic voters to get them to the polls, and to position Democratic politicians for primary races.

The woke left engages in campaigns of arson, gun violence, assault, trespass, and threats, then complain of the very things they do, and the consequences both financial and in lost liberties of their conduct.
DEATH, BE NOT PROUD OF DEMS: VENTURA RIPS GOP-BASHING WELLSTONE ‘MEMORIAL’
Guns don’t kill people. Trannies kill people.
Wasn’t Dick Cheney, Vice President and therefor President of the Senate, warned not to attend?
The New York Post article I gave a link for, said that Cheney had asked to attend, but was told by Wellstone's sons he wasn't welcome.
Time to focus on the Red Flag Law they failed to enforce they claim no one was aware of the law but that does not let them off the hook.
