This marks the final chapter for baseball. Throes of death. It was a good run. Just 30 years ago, there were baseball fields in the parks around here. Now the closest one is several miles away. In the 70s, in the Chicago suburbs, we could easily get enough kids together for several games a day. When we didn’t have a quorum, two of us would play fast pitch with a pinky rubber ball against a brick wall with a strike zone painted on it. All wood bats too. We probably played 16” softball as much as baseball. Easier to conscript neighbor kids because no gloves were used.

Now all the adults are playing “Pickle Ball” and the kids are on their screens.

Major League Baseball never recovered from the strike in 1994.

Back when I was a kid, my friends and I would go up to the local high school. They had two baseball fields. If the school wasn’t using a field, we were free to use it.

One field is gone now. The other is fenced in and locked. I don’t know how true it is, but I was told that’s for liability reasons. Kid trips over a rock. Parents sue the school.

🙁

The problem was the liability lawyers and insurance requirement. As a result all non supervised fields shut down. Look in the mirror. The problem was each of us that allowed the legal establishment to rule our lives. We elected lawyers to the legislature and local offices and they worked in their interests. Suprise.

I agree. First came astroturf, then the designated hitter, then the merger of the two leagues into a single organization, regular season inter-league play, doing away with the intentional walk, and now (I think) speeding up the game via a clock where baseball was the only major sport that had no clock (games were far too long, however).

Baseball is such a part of this country, crossing every geographic, demographic, and ideological line. This is heart breaking.
